Dynasty Dynamics

Progress Report: Prospect Edition, Part Two

by Ben Carsley and Craig Goldstein

When you’ve done rankings and mock drafts for two straight months, you kind of wonder… why would anyone write about anything else? Sure there are draft grades, but those aren’t nearly as applicable to fantasy.

Then it hits you like a ton of bricks. Something like a… a stock watch. No. Everyone does that. What if you just called it something else. Yes, now you’re cooking with gas. What about a Progress Report? Perfect.

Really though, this is meant to be something a bit different than your standard stock watch. Fantasy stocks are easy to keep track of. If someone’s doing well, then his stock is high. If not, it goes the other direction. The progress report is meant to tell you about players who have seen their actual value change in the long-term dynasty sense - not just guys riding a hot streak.

To that end, we’re also including a “neutral” section for guys that have performed awfully or admirably but haven’t moved the needle in a substantial direction long-term.

I've seen Michael Taylor a few times this season and read his performance slightly differently. His high strikeout and walk totals stem partly from how deep in counts he goes--as does his high walk rate. He always seems to be hitting at 2-2 or 3-2. A goodly number of the the K's I saw were called and a significant percentage of those were the product of Double-A umpiring--which is even less consistent than Double-A pitching or Double-A nachos. As for his BABIP: It's high, but not completely overblown. In my experience, his hits aren't just finding holes or dropping in. He's hitting the hell out of the ball and lots of them are line drives streaking past defenders. He appears to me to be a more mature hitter, in terms of pitch recognition, selection and patience than most at his confreres at this level and age. But youneverknow, I might have just caught him on his "good" days.

I appreciate the in-person perspective, thanks for chiming in!

I can also appreciate that hard swingers (especially those with speed) are going to miss a decent amount, but hit the ball hard when they connect, a la George Springer. Still, .447 is absolutely completely overblown. I should have looked up his career rate before throwing the .330 on him. It's .375, which I think is fair given his penchant for swinging hard and his good speed. That said, .447 is 75 points or so above that, which is a fairly drastic figure.

While it's fair to criticize minor league umpiring, perhaps Taylor is too passive at the plate, and lacks a two strike approach that would limit his strikeouts. That's going to be a problem at the major league level as well, as pitchers will be better at exploiting the holes in his swing, even in a zone that is called more consistently.

All that said, it's possible that I'm down on him more than I should be. It's not that I think this is a total fluke, but I do think it becomes hard to evaluate the hit tool when so many hits are dropping in. That's when I rely on our scouts, and the linked report gave him a 40 on his hit tool.

Thanks again for the additional perspective.

Will their be a fantasy top 50 update (as referenced under Daniel Norris)? If so, is their any expected release date? Thanks for the articles, they are excellent!

I really found the BP dynasty lists at the beginning of the season interesting, but it would be nice to see commments about movement relative to those initial lists. Once you have a season-opening list posted (even by other authors) it might be good if a player is going to be treated here, a mention be made about movement relative to those lists if the player is on them.
