Fantasy Freestyle

Straight Chasing

by Mauricio Rubio

In fantasy baseball and in life, even the best-laid plans can go down the tubes in quick and spectacular fashion.

Sometimes you gamble on Jose Veras and Prince Fielder to help carry you into first in saves and home runs, respectively. Maybe you thought Jose Fernandez was invincible and he alone would anchor your pitching staff as a true ace, both in fantasy and in the real world. Or maybe you had this surprise planned out for someone that you really liked, but then they found, out and now the whole thing is ruined, and now you don’t know what to do because oh my god why couldn’t Jesse just keep his mouth shut?

I digress.

In any event, let’s look at some fliers in the different categories and see if we can help out your categories that are lacking some oomph.

Home Runs
Lacking punch hurts as it will manifest itself in a few different categories. The home run will account for a run scored, an RBI, points of average, and of course, a home run. Your offense is probably in trouble if you messed up this category unless you went for a speedy construction that’s only got middling power.

If you’re in the middle of the pack home run-wise, my first recommendation is to see where you have surplus and try to deal out of that to get some power. If you’re dead last and you need to just pick up some extra points, I strongly suggest looking at Then Stash List first, and then looking at Junior Lake.

The disturbing thing about Jake Odorizzi is his numbers/ratios in the first 3 innings and his numbers/ratios after. Something perhaps to analyze?

Definitely worth looking into, worth more than the blurb I could provide here.

Thank you for your responses.
Per Odorizzi:

Other IP: 25.3-IP,23-K,16-BB,ERA-9.249,WHIP-2.372,BAA-0.386

Times through the order:

2nd 9: 22.2-IP,21-K,13-BB,ERA-9.324,WHIP-2.297,BAA-0.384
3rd 9: 11.0-IP,10-K, 5-BB,ERA-8.812,WHIP-1.636,BAA-0.289

Is it a case of him not varying his approach or guys just seeing hte ball better?

Could be some noise but I lean not varying approach enough. Young pitcher who has to learn some tricks. I will explore this.

Odorizzi used a *lot* of pitches his first time through the order. I believe he's averaging about 40 and given that he doesn't have a straight put away pitch, he has to do a lot of sequencing. My guess is at some point he has shown all his pitches and players can foul a bunch of balls off, and that happens more the second and third time through the order. Just off the top of my head, though I know he's missing plenty of bats, I think this is at least part of the issue.

Stolen Bases:
A) Would you drop Emilio Bonifacio for Eric Young Jr?
B) 16 team league would you consider Jarrod Dyson or Ender Inciarte for SB?

Would drop Boni for EY, 16 TM is about where I think about Dyson but I have to be desperate.

This worked better before Carlos Gonzales and Michael Cuddyer went town, but in my league guys loved to pick up Drew Stubbs or Corey Dickerson for Rockies homestands, then toss them away when the team went on the road. The same strategy could work for borderline guys on teams that make road trips through Colorado and Arizona, like the Braves just did.

So when do you just punt a category? I'm last in steals in a 12 teamer, not that close to 11th, and I'm not sure Gentry will get me out of the hole I've dug. Is it too early to just give up the category, pick up Adam Dunn / Nick Markakis, and try to max out everything else?

In a 12-teamer I have to think Gentry is going to hurt you more in R/RBI/HR then he will help you in steals. So I would not do that. Either punt, or trade for Billy Hamilton or Dee Gordon.
