Obviously coaches, managers, and teammates appreciate it when players run out balls no matter how hopeless it seems to be, and regardless of any marginal statistical gain in might provide. It's a relic of pre-sabermetric baseball sportsmanship.

Related question: I've never really understood the nature of the injuries we see relatively frequently where hitters pull or strain something on the way to first/crossing the bag, sometimes at nominal speed. Is that generally an acceleration or deceleration problem? Twisting something when a foot hits the bag? Seems an odd injury for healthy, strong guys.
