Draft Ten Pack

USA Baseball NHSI Edition

by Nick J. Faleris

At the end of March, USA Baseball held its third annual National High School Invitational at the USA Baseball training complex in Cary, NC. The event featured 16 of the top high school programs in the country in a single-elimination tournament format, with each team guaranteed four games via consolation matchups. The First Academy (Orlando, FL) took home the crown after back-to-back Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) titles (Mater Dei did not participate this year). Below are notes and some video on 10 of the event’s top participants, including a number of first round candidates for this year’s June draft. I’ll have notes and video on more participants in this week’s BP Prospect Team Ten Pack entry.

Mac Marshall (LHP, Parkview (Lilburn, GA)) | Commit: Louisiana State

If a high-school position player goes in the top five picks, who will it be?

Smart money would be on Brady Aiken (lhp, Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, CA)). He has had a very strong spring, seen an uptick in stuff, and is a lefty with a solid delivery.

Tyler Kolek (rhp, Shepherd (Shepherd, TX)) has size and velocity and could sneak in if enough college arms fail to finish strong.

Right now, no HS bats standing out as good top 5 bets with the depth in arms at the top of the class.

Foster Griffin is a left-handed pitcher, not a right-handed pitcher.

Where do scouts see Michael Rivera (Venice High School, FL) being drafted? He's an exceptional hitter and excellent defensive catcher, although he lacks size and athleticism (and hence much in the way of projection, I'm guessing). He is easily the best player of the 2014 class here in Southwest Florida.

I'll have notes on his performance at NHSI later this week. The bat is impressive, but shy of impactful at this point. I think his catch-and-throw game probably outdistances the rest of his defensive game by a fair amount. He isn't a lock to stick at catcher, though it is clearly where he fits best. It would be nice to see a tighter physique.

His draft status will probably come down to his asking price. The profile isn't a typical early round profile, but Somewhere in the 5th to 10th round is possible for a team that really likes the bat. He might be best served tightening up the game and body at UF and building a track record of performance at the collegiate level.
