Minor League Update

Games of April 4-6

by Jeff Moore

Friday, April 4

Kevin Gausman, RHP, Orioles (Norfolk, AAA): 4 2/3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K. Gausman was on a strict pitch count, leaving the game after 71 pitches, and it’s likely that the Orioles are going to build his endurance up early in the minor-league season so that he has something left in the tank for when he’s in the majors down the stretch, hopefully in meaningful games.

Trevor Bauer, RHP, Indians (Columbus, AAA): 6 IP, 2 H, R, 2 BB, 9 K. Two walks in six innings is a big step in the right direction for Bauer, as is missing bats. He spent the offseason refining things in his mechanics, but otherwise, there’s not much left for him to prove in the minors.

Kyle Parker, OF, Rockies (Colorado Springs, AAA): 3-4, 2 R, HR, BB. Power has never been a question for Parker, and it appears he’s going to hit enough to let it play at the highest level. He’ll never be a high-average hitter, but he’ll hit for enough power to make up for it and fit the corner-outfield profile.

Daniel Corcino, RHP, Reds (Pensacola, AA): 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, BB, 8 K. After he stumbled badly in Triple-A last year, the Reds sent Corcino back to Double-A to begin 2014. He’s already had success at the level, but he needs to prove he can throw more strikes.

Addison Russell, SS, A’s (Midland, AA): 2-2, R, HR. There’s a debate going on in the halls of the BP campus about which shortstop prospect you’d want to start a team with, and Russell is in the discussion.

Is Aguilar their 1B of the future or just a AAAA slugger?

That's the million dollar question, isn't it? His hit tool was the big question but as long as he keeps hitting, he ventures further away from being a AAAA/second-division regular regular type and more of a possible everyday player. I haven't gotten a look at him yet, but I'm sure someone from our team will this season.

Good stuff, although now I'm trying (and failing) to picture what "the halls of BP" look like.

Always appreciate the work Jeff. Who do you like most of Guzman, Renfroe, Hawkins, and McKinney?

Not a major prospect, but 21 year old Dwight Smith Jr. (a lefty, no less) took Cole Hamels deep twice while the Phillies ace was rehabbing with High-A Clearwater last night. His first two XBH of the year.

And Jason Parks sleeper Daniel Norris had a nice season debut for Dunedin: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K

After Micah Johnson was promoted to AA, I read multiple outlets that plainly stated or hinted, "we just didn't know he was that good". Well, it looks like AAA is going to just allow him to pad his silly MiLs for a MI. But, is he sticking at 2B or will he be De Aza's replacement while Semien takes over 2B and Davidson 3B?

I'd like to know more about him, too.

Should there be any concern with Renfroe's high K rate to start the season?

It's far too early to worry about any rate statistic. He'll swing and miss some but as long as the power is there, it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm glad you mention Adam Walker, better known as Adam Brett Walker II. I had the pleasure of seeing Correa and Buxton (among others) do some crazy things in the Midwest League last year, but I sat on a Cedar Rapids-Quad Cities series last June and saw Walker obliterate everything that came his way. The 'everything' is obviously part of the problem, of course, and he's a level at a time sort of prospect, but he's athletic and it could be really interesting if he figures it all out at the plate. Plus-power, plus-plus use of the full name and stirrups.
