Evan Brunell is a baseball writer and the president of the Massachusetts chapter of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. You can read more about his lip-reading methods, follow him on Twitter @EvanBrunell, send him lipreading requests @sportslipreader, and find his other baseball writing at Fire Brand of the American League.

Last January, Ben Lindbergh asked Evan Brunell for his assistance in deciphering the previously almost unintelligible arguments conducted during baseball games by people who don’t even play. The result was this article on the best manager-umpire arguments of 2012. Evan followed up on that piece with a sequel at Deadspin on the best manager-ump arguments of the first half of last season, and now he ties a bow on 2013 with a roundup of the best verbal battles that took place after last All-Star break. With the advent of expanded instant replay, the future of manager-umpire arguments has never been less clear. But the manager-ump arguments of the past have never been clearer.

On top of all the other reasons to like Joe Maddon as a manager, he also uses the best one-liners as he is getting himself ejected.

I'm really confused by the Pirates - Reds one. There was a beef all year between the teams it seemed, and the Reds threw at Pirates hitters a lot over the course of the season, several times at McCutchen.

I'm assuming Baker was referring to Hurdle as "that cocksucker", but what would make him so angry about arguing for an ejection instead of a warning? We're missing a lot of context here. It seems like maybe in the opinions of the umpires and Baker, the Pirates did something earlier in the game worthy of retribution? "I am going to argue it" seems to suggest he was told to let it go, that the score was now even and they should all stop the standoff and live with the warning.

Was there supposed to be some sort of unwritten understanding between them that they needed to be macho and handle it on the field and Baker took offense to Hurdle advocating for the umps to punish the Reds' player? In light of this discussion coming right after a reliever beaned the Pirates star player, how do we read this exchange between a secondary ump and Baker?:

Gerry Davis to Dusty Baker: (laughing) I understand, I understand.

DB: Fucking mad at him — for playing that game.

GD: Listen, listen…

GD: — can’t let him bat again. No question about it. No question at all.

DB: You think I should get him out?

GD: Yeah. We’re enforcing (OBSCURED)

DB: Fuck that cocksucker.

GD: (OBSCURED)

DB: Yeah, but that’s shitty (OBSCURED) shit.

How is anyone else reading this? Clearly Baker feels like something is unfair or some unwritten rule is being violated. And who couldn't he let bat again?
evanbrunell
3/20
I agree something is very fishy with this. When I originally transcribed it, I thought that Baker and Davis were discussing that Baker had to retaliate. I definitely think there is a lot of missing context here.
klipzlskim

I assumed that Baker and Davis were talking about removing the Reds' pitcher before his next at-bat...
PelotaDiSoldi

Why say "again" then? It was a reliever who probably only gets 2 AB a season, and he hadn't already had an AB in that game. Seems like he's talking about someone else.

Also, just realized that I was at that game. This action led off the bottom of the 8th, then the Pirates blew a lead in the top of the 9th and lost in extras.
