Baseball Prospectus News

MLB.TV Discount Available to BP Premium Subscribers

by Rob McQuown and Ben Lindbergh

If you've ever tried to settle an argument by citing a statistic developed in the last decade, you may have found yourself on the receiving end of a common refrain: "Get your head out of that spreadsheet and try watching a game." Of course, there's never been any truth to the idea that people who like to study baseball stats do so instead of seeing games. If and when we have our heads stuck in spreadsheets, it's because we watch a lot of games and enjoy them so much that we want to better understand what we're seeing. And for people who watch a lot of baseball, the ability to stream games online through MLB.TV since the 2002 season has made life a lot better.

Which brings us to today's good news. All current and new yearly Baseball Prospectus Premium and Super Premium subscribers are in for a special bonus: a one-time coupon good for a 20 percent discount on a 2014 MLB.TV Premium Yearly Subscription.

We'll get to how much money off that means in a moment. If you've never used MLB.TV, here's what you need to know first. MLB.TV allows you to watch every 2014 Regular Season out-of-market game (and many 2014 spring training games) live or on-demand in HD Quality, choosing between home and away TV and radio broadcast feeds (or a commentary-free "Park" feed). The product lets you watch up to four games at once, and its DVR functionality lets you pause or rewind live games. You can access MLB.TV not only through your computer, but through your Xbox, PlayStation, Apple TV, Roku, and many other connected devices. You can also watch games on the go through MLB.TV's included At Bat app on Apple, Android, and other mobile platforms.

Here's why we're excited about this discount: Not only are we big fans of MLB.TV, we're big fans of people subscribing to Baseball Prospectus. And for the kind of people who subscribe to our site—namely, the kind who watch a lot of baseball—a 20 percent discount on MLB.TV makes BP an even better deal.

Let's be Baseball Prospectus-y for a second and do a little math. A one-year subscription to MLB.TV premium costs $129.99. Taking 20 percent off of that total saves you $26. A one-year Premium subscription to BP costs $39.95, so if you purchase both MLB.TV Premium and Baseball Prospectus Premium and apply the 20 percent MLB.TV discount, you'll be getting BP Premium for an additional $13.95—just over a dollar a month. If you're interested in MLB.TV Premium and a BP Super Premium subscription, you can get the latter at a net cost of only $28.99 after applying the MLB.TV discount, close to 50 percent off.

Here's how to proceed. If you don't have a Baseball Prospectus Premium or Super Premium subscription, sign up for one here. (If you've already subscribed to BP, this discount offer is an additional perk that makes your decision look smarter.) If you already have an MLB.com account, click this link and sign in on the next page. If you don't have an MLB.com account, you'll need to register before continuing with the purchase.

To get the discount, you'll need a one-time coupon code. This can be found on the "manage your profile" page, which can be accessed by BP subscribers from the blue login bar that appears on most pages on the Baseball Prospectus site:

From there, you'll see the following near the top of the "manage your profile" page if you are a Premium or Super Premium subscriber:

To get your 20 percent discount, you'll need to enter the coupon code from the Baseball Prospectus "manage your profile" page (where 9999999999 appears in the example above) into the MLB.tv subscription form. Then, just complete your purchase, sit back, and watch baseball.

Those links, one more time:

One coupon code per Premium (or Super Premium) Baseball Prospectus subscription. If you've already purchased , the 20 percent discount cannot be applied retroactively. Great perk, but MLB.tv auto-renews subscribers in early March, so I bet a lot of BP/MLB.tv subscribers won't enjoy the discount.

I am also on auto-renew and was charged the 2014 $129.95 subscription charge on my last credit card statement. I called MLB-TV today to find out if it were possible to get the BP discount applied to my account and was told that it was not. I promptly cancelled my subscription for 2014 and was told by the customer service rep that my credit card would be refunded the full $129.95 amount within 5 - 7 days. I believe this to be true as the season has not actually started as yet. I plan to open a new account using the promotional code as soon as the system deletes my existing account.

We apologize, but this is something new just provided to us. We hope to continue to provide this in Future years, as well, as part of our partnership with MLB.com.

Hmm. How about a trade for prospects -- say, a 2014 MiLB.tv subscription discount and a 2015 MLB.tv discount?

Throw in a streaming service discount to be named later and you've got a deal.

There is no MiLB discount available. But more than likely, there will a continuation of the MLB.TV program next year, and the coupons will probably will be issued sooner. This is the first year of our partnership so it's taken some time to get all the particulars sorted out.

Can we apply this year's discount to next year's purchase at MLB.tv? It seems kind of annoying to have to cancel auto-renew in order to wait for the discount next time around.

When you live in rural Oregon and your in-market teams include the Mariners, Giants and A's....325 to 480 miles away...it's absurd. Not in those metro areas broadcast market. If this were applied to the Atlantic seaboard, about a third of the teams would be in-market.

If you were of a certain mind, and have access to an ssh account on a computer not in the blackout area, you could google for "ssh tunnel" to ... ahem.. avoid certain issues with blackouts.

I have the same issue with Detroit, Cleveland, & Cincinnati. I live 2 hours north of Cincinnati, so I understand that one. But I live just over 3 hours south of Detroit and just over 3 hours southwest of Cleveland.

My only work around is the Directv MLB extra innings but at a much higher cost..

In sure most of us are in this boat (including me)--any of us that already use MLB.TV had it autorenewed at the start of Spring Training. A work around work be lovely, thought I know I might be hard to do since this deal did just get made. Ah well. $26, I hardly knew ye.

To be clear, I know this is a nice thing for BP subscribers overall, and I don't mean to look a gift horse in the mouth. Considering that I already paid for both BP and MLB.TV, the lack of this deal applying to me or the rest of us who were auto-renewed is obviously not a big deal. Hopefully next year if the promotion continues the timing will be slightly different. Thanks for finding something like this for us subscribers, guys.

It's pretty ridiculous that they won't allow this coupon to be used by those who were auto-renewed. Just makes me less likely to recommend this service to other users. I know the auto-renew without warning as pissed a lot of other people off in the past. It's a great product, but their customer service is sub-par.

This is awesome. I guess I am one of the lucky few (?) this applies to, as I have wanted mlb.tv for awhile but couldn't justify it as I live in-market and am blacked out of my own personal favorite team's games. 20% off is probably enough to get me to pay so I can watch all the other teams as well. Thanks, all.

They'll be able to address your questions better than we can. Thank you.

I subscribe to MLB.TV for the Jays games (which are never blacked out -- team policy) and usually watch the Angels game afterwards (which I started doing after the Vernon Wells trade, curious to see how he'd do). It's great having one team in the east and one in the west. Almost every night's a double-header.

Also done in by the auto renew of mlb.tv I have been a subscriber for years to both services. Already sent an request to customer service asking about the discount. You would think mlb would want to make their yearly subscribers happy. I certainly won't let it auto renew next year if I have to cancel and re sub to get this discount.

Thanks for asking about MLB.tv! The promotion with MLB.tv is being finalized and we'll publish the discount codes as soon as they're available. MLB.tv will not accept the discount code retroactively. Last season the promotion was announced in mid-March, although we expect it to be earlier this season, we do not yet have a firm date. Yes, all Premium and Super Premium subscribers will receive a new discount code on the "Manage Your Profile" page of the BP site. Please contact BP Customer Service with any questions.

Hi! We don't have any information on when the MLB.tv discount codes will be released to us for the 2015 season. Please stay tuned to BaseballProspectus.com for more information. The codes will appear on the "Manage Your Profile" page as soon as they're available. This is a nice perk that MLB.tv is offering to our BP One Year Premium and Super Premium subscribers. Thank you for your patience.

That's unfortunate. The mlb.TV coupon code was the determining factor when purchasing the baseball prospectus subscription. I'm disappointed that I'll be sitting on my hands waiting to buy while there are games going on.
