The 2014 Annual is Out; Ebook Is Coming

by Sam Miller

Among the many things we're proud of about Baseball Prospectus 2014—the incredible group of writers, from both inside and outside of our organization; the tremendous writing that this incredible group turned in; the lineout for Matthew Duffy—is that it's out already. We know your drafts start early and we know that it takes a lot of time to read every word, so speed in delivery to you is crucial. Some years it arrives on your doorstep in late February, so to be a full month ahead of that is really something we're pleased with.

One funny thing about having the book on doorsteps on January 23rd, three weeks before the scheduled release date, is that it arrived before the Kindle version was even ready. Framed one way, this is probably annoying to some of you Kindlers. You don't want to wait! We understand. But we want to reassure everybody that the Kindle version is actually right on schedule; it should be out soon, and we are hearing promising status updates from the publisher. In fact, I can say with almost total confidence that you will have the Kindle version far earlier than it was originally scheduled. It is ahead of schedule. It's just not as ahead of schedule as the physical book turned out to be.

So, here's your task for the day: If you're a physical-book reader, a person who likes to line pretty things up on bookshelves, go buy the book. It's out. It's being read. It's having nice things said about it. It's $1 less today than it was yesterday, for some reason. Once you get it, and once you read it, go find one of the many talented writers whose name is in the book and compliment him or her on the great job he or she did.

If you're a Kindle reader—or iTunes, Nook, or other non-Kindle format for which we've traditionally released the book—then keep checking on Amazon or at your ebook vendor of choice. "Soon," we're told. Soon is relative, and soon is vague, but soon is good. It'll be soon.

Since the book is out, does that mean 2014 PECOTA projections are coming to the site soon?

Loving the book. What about the app of the book, with the updated stats through the season? Will this be coming out? Does it have a price yet?

Don't think we're doing an app this year, sorry.

Ugh. Am I the only one exasperated to (very belatedly) read this? Last year I downloaded the annual (e-book), only to find it glacially, comically slow to search. This renders it essentially unusable for a fantasy draft. By the time the search function finds the player you're wanting to read about, he and the next five players have been auctioned off.

Surprised. Once you have the guts of an app, updating it for the next season should just be changing out an XML file, since you're writing the blurbs anyway.

I guess it's back to paper, and pretending that it's 2005.

Pretty awesome (accidental?) pun, tbwhite.

See my comment below.

It was accidental, or my sub-conscious is working on some whole other awesome punny level. Because my conscious mind stared at my comment for a good 5 minutes before I finally saw the pun.

just to follow up, have a look at the Henderson Alvarez player card--the comment that was written for Baseball Prospectus 2014 should be visible to all.

I've called 3 barnes and nobles brick and marter stores and no one has them and no idea when they are getting them! I don't want to wait for amazon to ship mine any longer! Any idea when BN stores will get a shipment in?

Have you thought about giving a discount on the PDF version for those who buy the print edition? I like having the paper book but I do a fair amount of fantasy scheming at work and it would be nice to not have to cart the physical book around...

I think this is a good idea. In fact that's what we did with Dollar Sign on the Muscle. However as we are working with a conventional publisher for baseball prospectus 2014 it is their call, not ours. I will pass the suggestion along. Thanks!

I second the discount E-book version for print customers! (Baseball Forecaster offers this for 9.99 I believe, and free if you're a subscriber and pre-order through the site)

I travel for work and it's pretty ridiculous to cart the BP Annual everywhere (although it's nearly as ridiculous to make a trade without consulting my "assistant GM")

Just an fyi, the title metadata on Amazon has a date in the future which is misleading:

Baseball Prospectus 2014 Paperback – February 11, 2014

I ordered a copy and look forward to reading it.

Also note that it is not directly available on Amazon.ca, but must be ordered through a 3rd part seller from the US, which adds a sizeable import tax to the purchase. Some of whom also are selling used copies. How much use could anyone have yet had with BP 2014?
I ended up ordering from amazon.com and will pay the import fee through them.

Try ordering through indigo.ca.

I just ordered my annual for about $17.50 through pre-order.

Love the book each year and love the site.

But why do you promote amazon so heavily? Do they pay you for all your mentions, links, and generic mentions of their E-Reader Product (the only proprietary, or company store E-Reader on the market)?

Does Bezos own BP now?

Still can't wait to dive into this year's book! I'll get it from a bookstore, though.

We do get a commission for each amazon purchase.

We love bookstores! By all means get Baseball Prospectus 2014 from one, and thanks for buying and reading it.

As noted above, Henderson Alvarez is missing. My guess is that you are missing the first page of the Miami pitching section. Can you publish this on-line as an addendum?

It's not that. The Alvarez comment was written, edited and signed off on our master list, but then got eaten somehow before we sent it off to the publisher, either a tech issue or (more likely) something foolish like I highlighted it and hit the space bar or something. For non-interesting reasons related to how we work in the content management system, if this happened it wouldn't necessarily be something we'd catch, and we didn't; it now simply doesn't exist, anywhere in the world. Words lost forever, like Hemingway's Lost Suitcase.

I haven't heard any such issues for any other players, though by all means let us know if there are.

Todd Helton was missing last year. It's like he retired one year early.

Have a look at the Henderson Alvarez player card--you can get there by clicking his name in this comment. His Baseball Prospectus 2014 player comment should be visible to all. Sorry about that.

WHOA! It lives. And I am acquitted of charges of having highlighted it and hit the space bar.

Really good comment.

I just ordered BP 2014 from a Canadian on-line retailer. It indicated that it would ship around February 11, 2014. I gather you guys are several weeks ahead of schedule--can you confirm/disconfirm that the Canadian books have shipped/will ship and I don't have to wait for another 2 weeks?

Thanks very much!
