The Good

  • Carlos Martinez, RHP, Cardinals (Aguilas Cibaenas, DWL): 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, BB, 5 K. Martinez bounced back from a rough outing his last time out to throw seven strong innings without allowing a run.
  • Jason Rogers, 1B, Brewers (Leones del Escogido, DWL): 2-3, R. Rogers doesn’t move the needle too much, even in a weak Brewers system, but he’s already 25 and put up good power numbers in Double-A last year. The Brewers first base situation is wide open, so Rogers could be a darkhorse to see some time there this season.
  • Jesus Aguilar, 1B, Indians (Leones del Caracas, VWL): 2-4, 2 R, HR, BB, K. There’s not much left to say about the winter Aguilar has had, other than that it has to have gotten the Indians’ attention, and the only thing left now is to see if he can repeat the power barrage stateside.
  • Ender Inciarte, CF, Diamondbacks (Aguilas del Zuila, VWL): 3-4, 2 R, BB. Inciarte is at his best, and frankly is only effective as an offensive player, when he’s getting on base and using his legs like he did on Wednesday night.

The Bad

  • Adys Portillo, RHP, Padres (Aguilas del Zuila, VWL): 1 2/3 IP, H, 2 R, 2 BB. It’s been a rough offseason for Portillo, who was designated for assignment by the Padres and went unclaimed. There’s no telling if that’s affected his performance, but he struggled badly in the AFL (8.74 ERA) then recovered slightly in the Venezuelan regular season before struggling again in the playoffs.
  • Jordan Lennerton, 1B, Tigers (Leones de Ponce, PRWL): 0-4, R, BB, K. After a strong Puerto Rican regular season, Lennerton has cooled off, hitting just .143 in the playoffs.

Major Leaguer of the Night

  • Freddy Galvis, SS, Phillies (Aguilas del Zuila, VWL): 2-5, 2 R, 2B, HR. Galvis is having an excellent winter, having hit .306/.373/.404 during the Venezuelan regular season and now hitting .383 in the postseason.

Nobody’s Perfect

  • Not even Bobby Abreu, who was held hitless for the first time in recent memory. Because people will ask if I don’t include him in the MLU, he went 0-for-4 but still walked and scored a run.
