Hitter of the Day: Stephen Piscotty, RF, Cardinals (Salt River Rafters): 2-4, 2 R, 2B, 3B, BB. Piscotty continues to be red-hot this fall and put together another strong day. He now has three straight multi-hit games.

Pitcher of the Day: Matt Heidenreich, RHP, Astros (Peoria Javelinas): 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K. It’s a slow day in the AFL when the pitcher of the day walked three batters, but Heidenreich did limit the damage by missing some bats and limiting the hits. It was actually an abnormal start for Heidenreich, who doesn’t usually rack up the strikeout numbers but typically has very good control.

Seeing it Well

  • Japhet Amador, 1B, Astros, (Peoria Javelinas): 2-4, 2B, 2 K. Amador appears on this list for the second straight day, one day after hitting his first AFL homer. Amador reached base twice in this one, but was lifted for a pinch runner late, something he should become accustomed to, if he’s not already.
  • Max Kepler, 1B, Twins (Glendale Desert Dogs): 2-3, 2 R, 2B. The big German is still quite young (20-years-old) and is even younger for the AFL. He is still dealing with inconsistencies in his game at the plate, but his 6-foot-4 frame allows scouts to dream on him developing more power.

Finding the Zone

  • Kyle Crick, RHP, Giants, (Scottsdale Scorpions): 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K. In Crick’s first AFL start, his control issues reared their ugly head and he gave up four runs in two innings. This time around, he still walked two batters in three innings, but he was much more effective in spite of it. Crick consistently battles his control, but when he’s on, he racks up the strikeouts in piles.
  • Tyler Waldron, RHP, Pirates (Scottsdale Scorpions): 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. This type of start is typical for the kind of success Waldron can have. He can get his outs, but it’s going to involve a lot of balls in play. He doesn’t miss many pats and profiles as more of a reliever in the majors.

Bad Days at the Plate

  • Kris Bryant, 3B, Cubs (Mesa Solar Sox): 0-3, BB, 2 K. It couldn’t be all good news for the Cubs prospects this fall, but Bryant is still hitting .381 thus far in the AFL.
  • Andrew Susac, C, Giants (Scottsdale Scorpions): 0-3, BB, 2 K. Despite moving from the hitter-friendly California League to the pitcher-friendly conditions in Richmond, Susac improved his strikeout-to-walk ratio this season, indicating a developing approach at the plate. He struggled on Wednesday, but Susac has plus raw power and slugged .458 this season.

Forgettable Outings

  • Malcom Culver, RHP, Royals, (Peoria Javelinas): 2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 0 K. Culver isn’t much of a prospect to begin with, but coming off a decent season relieving for High-A Wilmington, the AFL was a chance to prove he’s ready to move quickly. This did not help.

Any time a Cubs prospect takes a walk, it's good news.
