  • Mets SP Jonathan Niese picked up his 5th win of the season allowing just one run in 6 innings while striking out nine.
  • Mets got homers from Marlon Byrd, Ike Davis and Daniel Murphy.
  • Padres OF Will Venable hit his 16 homer of the year in the loss.
(54-67) Giants - 14 at 10 - Marlins (46-74)
  • Giants OF Hunter Pence had a monster day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, and five RBI.
  • Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval led a thundering offensive attack, reaching base in all six of his plate appearances and driving home three runs.
  • Giants RP Chad Gaudin was knocked around in a no-decision, allowing eight runs on 11 hits over his four-plus innings.
  • Marlins OF Justin Ruggiano blasted a pair of home runs and drove home four.
  • Marlins SP Nathan Eovaldi was annihilated, surrendering a career-high 11 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits in his three-plus innings of work.

  • Pirates OF Jose Tabata connected for a two-run home run and drew a walk.
  • Pirates SP Gerrit Cole improved to 6-5 on the season after yielding two runs over six innings.
  • Diamondbacks SP Brandon McCarthy allowed four runs over 5 2/3 innings.
  • Diamondbacks 3B Martin Prado went 2-for-4 with an RBI single.
(69-53) Reds - 6 at 7 - Brewers (53-69)
  • Brewers C Jonathan Lucroy connected for a walk-off two-run homer against Aroldis Chapman in the bottom of the ninth inning.
  • Reds RP Aroldis Chapman blew a save by giving up a walk-off two-run home run to Jonathan Lucroy.
  • Brewers RP Tom Gorzelanny was touched up for five runs over 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision.
  • Reds SP Mike Leake allowed four runs over five innings in a no-decision.
  • Reds 3B Todd Frazier reached base in all four plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a home run, four RBI and a walk.
(69-52) Cardinals - 0 at 7 - Cubs (53-68)
  • Cubs SP Jake Arrieta pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out seven, in a victory.
  • Cardinals SP Jake Westbrook struggled through 6 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs—six earned—and walking five.
  • Cubs 3B Donnie Murphy stayed hot, going 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.
  • Cardinals 2B Kolten Wong went 0-for-3 before coming out in a double-switch in his major league debut.

  • Dodgers SP Zack Greinke fired 7 1/3 scoreless innings allowing just three hits.
  • Phillies SP Cliff Lee yielded three runs over eight innings.
  • Dodgers SS Hanley Ramirez went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs scored.
  • Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins went 0-for-3 with a walk.
(59-62) Nationals - 2 at 3 - Braves (75-47) (10 innings)
  • Braves OF Justin Upton belted a walkoff solo homer in the 10th inning.
  • Braves RP Alex Wood delivered another strong start in a no-decision, allowing just one run on five hits over his 6 1/3 innings.
  • Nationals OF Jayson Werth went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
  • Nationals SP Taylor Jordan pitched well in what is likely to be his final start of the 2013 season, allowing a pair of unearned runs on seven hits over his six innings of work.

American League:

(63-57) Royals - 2 at 1 - Tigers (71-50) (Game 1)
  • Royals SP Danny Duffy, who was called up before the game, allowed just one hit over six innings to pick up the victory.
  • Tigers SP Justin Verlander took a loss despite pitching eight innings of two-run ball.
  • Tigers 2B Ramon Santiago came off the bench to hit his first homer since June 9, 2012.
(64-57) Royals - 3 at 0 - Tigers (71-51) (Game 2)
  • Royals 1B Eric Hosmer belted a two-run homer.
  • Royals RP Greg Holland picked up his second save of the day, working another scoreless ninth inning.
  • Royals SP James Shields tossed seven scoreless innings while allowing just three hits.
  • Tigers 1B Prince Fielder had a rough night at the plate, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
  • Tigers SP Jose Alvarez pitched decently in a losing effort, surrendering two runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings.
(47-74) White Sox - 5 at 2 - Twins (54-66)
  • White Sox SP Jose Quintana allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings.
  • Twins SP Kevin Correia yielded five runs (four earned) over 7 1/3 innings.
  • White Sox 1B Adam Dunn went 2-for-3 with a solo homer, a walk, and two runs scored.
  • Twins C Joe Mauer finished 3-for-4 with a solo homer and a walk.
(63-58) Yankees - 10 at 3 - Red Sox (72-52)
  • Yankees SP Andy Pettitte allowed three runs (none earned) in 6 2/3 innings.
  • Red Sox SP Felix Doubront was blasted for seven runs (six earned) over four innings in a loss.
  • Yankees OF Alfonso Soriano's incredible week continued, as he finished 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored.
  • Making his Yankees debut, 1B Mark Reynolds went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI.
  • Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
(56-65) Mariners - 3 at 1 - Rangers (70-52)
  • Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma spun seven innings of one-run ball.
  • Mariners RP Danny Farquhar tossed a perfect ninth inning for his sixth save.
  • Rangers SP Derek Holland tossed seven shutout innings while striking out six, but was handed a no-decision.
  • Mariners 3B Kyle Seager snapped an 0-for-21 hitless streak with a go-ahead two-run homer.
  • Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre went 2-for-2 with two walks.
(40-81) Astros - 8 at 2 - Angels (54-67)
(56-66) Blue Jays - 4 at 5 - Rays (69-51)
  • Rays C Jose Lobaton played the role of hero, delivering a one-out RBI triple.
  • Rays SP Jeremy Hellickson turned in a quality start in a no-decision, allowing three runs on nine hits over his six frames.
  • Blue Jays 2B Maicer Izturis had a nice day at the dish, going 3-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Blue Jays SP R.A. Dickey pitched decently in a no-decision, allowing four runs on six hits over his seven frames.
(65-57) Indians - 2 at 3 - Athletics (69-52)
  • Athletics SP A.J. Griffin pitched well in a no decision dealing 5 shutout innings.
  • Indians SP Justin Masterson took the loss allowing three runs in 7.2 innings.
  • Athletics OF Yoenis Cespedes blasted his 20th homer of the yera in the 1st inning.
Inter League:
(58-65) Rockies - 6 at 3 - Orioles (65-56)
  • Rockies C Wilin Rosario (hamstring) went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs scored.
  • Rockies SP Juan Nicasio notched his seventh win of the season by allowing two runs over six innings.
  • Orioles SP Wei-Yin Chen yielded four runs over 6 1/3 innings in a loss.
  • Orioles C Matt Wieters launched a solo homer and drew a walk.

  • Dodgers recalled OF Scott Van Slyke from Triple-A Albuquerque.
  • Cubs recalled RHP Jake Arrieta from Triple-A Iowa.
  • Cubs optioned RHP Eduardo Sanchez to Triple-A Iowa.

  • The Phillies have fired manager Charlie Manuel.
  • Marlins recalled RHP Arquimedes Caminero from Double-A Jacksonville.

  • Phillies recalled RHP B.J. Rosenberg from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

National League:

  • An MRI on Brewers OF Carlos Gomez's right knee confirmed a sprain.
  • MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports that 2B Tyler Pastornicky's left knee injury is "starting to sound like more than just a day-to-day deal."
  • Brewers SP Yovani Gallardo (hamstring) will be activated from the disabled list to start on Saturday against the Reds.
  • Padres OF Kyle Blanks (Achilles) jogged for 15 minutes on a treadmill Thursday.
  • Rockies manager Walt Weiss said he's undecided on whether Rafael Betancourt (appendicitis) will regain his closer job or pitch in a setup role.
  • Mets SP Jeremy Hefner (elbow) will see another specialist on Monday for a second opinion on his injured elbow.
  • Mets 3B Wilmer Flores (ankle) will attempt running from first to third before Friday's game to determine whether or not his injured ankle would hold up.
  • OF Carlos Quentin (knee) will rest his knee for the next 10 days before the Padres' organization allows him to ramp up activities again.
  • Nationals RP Ross Ohlendorf (shoulder) is expected to throw between 80-85 pitches during his minor league rehab start with High-A Potomac on Friday.
  • Cubs RP Matt Guerrier underwent surgery Friday to repair the flexor mass in his right arm.
  • Pirates SP Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) threw a simulated game Friday.
American League:
  • Royals pitching prospect Kyle Zimmer is likely to be shut down for the rest of the season due to right shoulder stiffness.
  • Royals 3B Mike Moustakas (calf) fielded some grounders Friday.
  • Blue Jays SP Josh Johnson will be cleared to throw from a mound as soon as the discomfort in his right forearm goes away.
  • Rays RP Juan Carlos Oviedo (elbow) had to be shut down from throwing for a few days recently because of lat soreness.
  • The Rays are hoping that SP Matt Moore (elbow) will be ready to rejoin the rotation by next weekend.
  • Yankees SS Derek Jeter (calf) has yet to run the bases since being placed on the disabled list.
  • Orioles RP Francisco Rodriguez was removed from Friday's game with a strained right groin, but expects to avoid the disabled list.
  • Angels SP Tommy Hanson fared well in his first start with Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits in his five innings of work.
  • Indians SP Corey Kluber (finger) played catch from a distance of 90 feet on Friday without any issue.
  • Angels DH Albert Pujols (foot) is out of a walking boot for the first time in three weeks, and reiterated on Friday that he still hopes to return before the end of the season.
  • C John Jaso (concussion) is expected to miss another 3-4 weeks before returning to the Athletics' lineup.
  • Twins OF Aaron Hicks (heel) is expected to require just a minimum stint on the disabled list at Tripe-A Rochester.
  • Mariners C Mike Zunino (hand) has progressed to taking swings off of a tee for the first time since undergoing surgery in late July to remove the broken hamate bone from his left wrist.
  • Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News writes that the Rangers may hold out DH Lance Berkman (hip, knee) until September 1.
  • Rangers SP Neftali Feliz (elbow, triceps) felt good following a bullpen session Thursday.
  • Rays DH Luke Scott is currently dealing with back spasms.
  • Rangers SP Alexi Ogando was diagnosed with inflammation in a nerve in his right shoulder.
  • Orioles SP Jason Hammel (forearm) played catch Friday.
  • Rays RP Jesse Crain (shoulder) threw from a distance of 105 feet on Friday.
  • Rays OF Desmond Jennings (finger) took batting practice Friday for the first time since being placed on the disabled list.
Notes and Rumors

National League:
  • Padres C Nick Hundley could return from the paternity leave list as soon as Friday.
  • Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said that 3B David Freese "will still play" following the promotion of Kolten Wong.
  • Reds RP J.J. Hoover has not been scored upon in his last 21 appearances.
  • Mets C Travis d'Arnaud will officially be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas before Saturday's game against the Padres.
  • The Mets will place C John Buck on the paternity leave list on Saturday.
  • Giants C Buster Posey, who was held out of Friday's lineup against the Marlins in favor of Hector Sanchez, is also expected to sit for Sunday's series finale.
  • 3B Paul Janish is expected to serve as the Braves' primary second baseman while Dan Uggla is on the disabled list.
  • Nationals manager Davey Johnson indicated Friday that SP Taylor Jordan will get to make at least one more start before being shut down for the season.
American League
  • Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox are "certainly interested" in Cuban first baseman Jose Dariel Abreu.
  • Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that there "appears to be mutual interest and conversations" between the Rays and OF Delmon Young.
  • Indians SP Scott Kazmir is in line to start Sunday against the Athletics.
  • Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Thursday that the slumping SS Pedro Florimon will remain the team's starter at shortstop.
  • Red Sox prospect Henry Owens turned in another dominant performance on Friday in his third start at Double-A Portland, tossing five no-hit innings while walking three and striking out 10.
  • Indians manager Terry Francona said Friday that SP Carlos Carrasco is moving to the bullpen.
  • Orioles SP Bud Norris will start Saturday against the Rockies.
