  • Rockies RP Rex Brothers surrendered a run on two hits, but still managed to secure his eighth save of the season.
  • Rockies SP Jhoulys Chacin pitched an outstanding ballgame, surrendering just one run on six hits over his eight innings.
  • Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.
  • Pirates SP Gerrit Cole struck out six, but was handed his fifth loss of the season after surrendering three runs on three hits and a pair of walks over 5 1/3 innings.
  • Rockies SS Troy Tulowitzki homered and drove home a pair of runs.
(64-44) Cardinals - 13 at 3 - Reds (60-50)
  • Cardinals 2B Daniel Descalso socked a pair of solo homers and scored three runs.
  • Cardinals SP Shelby Miller racked up eight strikeouts en route to his 11th victory of the season, allowing three runs on five hits over his five innings of work.
  • Reds 1B Joey Votto blasted a three-run homer.
  • Reds SP Bronson Arroyo was hammered, surrendering seven runs on eight hits in just 3 2/3 innings.
(59-49) Dodgers - 6 at 2 - Cubs (49-60)
  • Batting out of the cleanup spot, Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.
  • Cubs SP Travis Wood walked five and gave up five runs in 3 1/3 innings.
  • Cubs OF Cole Gillespie went 3-for-5 with a couple of doubles and an RBI.
(65-45) Braves - 6 at 4 - Phillies (50-59)
  • Braves 3B Chris Johnson went 2-for-4 with a solo homer.
  • Braves SP Kris Medlen gave up four runs over six innings.
  • Phillies SP Ethan Martin struggled in his major league debut, giving up six runs over 4 1/3 innings.
  • Phillies OF Delmon Young went 3-for-4 with a solo homer.

American League:

(40-67) White Sox - 1 at 2 - Tigers (62-45)
  • Tigers OF Austin Jackson's solo homer in the fifth inning, proved to be the difference.
  • Tigers RP Joaquin Benoit slammed the door, protecting a one-run advantage and earning his 11th save of the season.
  • Tigers SP Doug Fister earned his 10th win of the season on Friday, limiting the White Sox to one run on seven hits over eight strong innings of work.
  • White Sox OF Alex Rios had a nice day at the dish, going 2-for-3 with a walk, the team's lone RBI and his 23rd stolen base of the season.
  • White Sox SP Hector Santiago racked up seven strikeouts in a losing effort, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk over his seven frames.
(50-59) Blue Jays - 5 at 7 - Angels (50-58)
  • Angels OF Kole Calhoun went 4-for-6 and hit his first major league home run.
  • Angels RP Ernesto Frieri picked up his 26th save with a scoreless ninth.
(61-49) Rangers - 8 at 3 - Athletics (63-46)
  • Rangers 2B Jurickson Profar got the start at DH and homered.
  • Rangers SP Alexi Ogando was removed after allowing three runs in four innings and walking five.
  • Athletics SP Tommy Milone was tagged for six runs in 3 2/3 innings.
(50-59) Mariners - 8 at 11 - Orioles (61-49)
  • Orioles 1B Chris Davis launched his 40th home run of the season.
  • Orioles SP Chris Tillman allowed six runs over 5 1/3 innings giving up eight hits.
  • Mariners SP Aaron Harang was blasted for seven runs in five innings.
  • Orioles OF Nate McLouth went 2-for-5 with a grand slam and two runs scored in a slugfest.
  • Mariners DH Kendrys Morales finished 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored.
(36-72) Astros - 3 at 4 - Twins (46-60) (13 innings)
  • Astros RP Chia-Jen Lo blew a save opportunity.
  • Twins 2B Brian Dozier played hero by delivering a walk-off RBI single in the 13th inning.
  • Twins SP Samuel Deduno gave up two runs over six innings in a no-decision.
  • Astros SP Jared Cosart was handed a no-decision after tossing seven innings of one-run ball.
  • Astros SS Jonathan Villar went 0-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and two strikeouts.
Inter League:
(56-53) Diamondbacks - 7 at 6 - Red Sox (66-45)
  • Diamondbacks OF Cody Ross had a big night against his former team, going 4-for-5 with a home run, three RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base.
  • Diamondbacks SP Randall Delgado notched his third straight victory, despite allowing a season-high six runs (four earned) over six innings.
  • Red Sox SP Jon Lester was tagged for six runs over 4 1/3 innings.
  • Red Sox SS Stephen Drew went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly.
(54-51) Royals - 2 at 4 - Mets (48-58) (11 innings)
  • Mets OF Eric Young, Jr. blasted a walk-off two-run homer in the 11th inning.
  • Mets RP David Aardsma blew a save chance.
  • Mets SP Dillon Gee surrendered one run over seven-plus innings in a no-decision.
  • Royals SP Wade Davis yielded two runs over five innings in a no-decision.
  • Royals SS Alcides Escobar went 0-for-4 with a walk in Friday's extra-inning loss to the Mets.
(60-49) Indians - 0 at 10 - Marlins (43-65)
  • Marlins 1B Logan Morrison went 4-for-5 and plated four runs.
  • Marlins SP Jose Fernandez delivered an absolutely dominating performance, striking out a career-high 14 over eight shutout innings.
  • Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera had a rough night, going 1-for-4 with three strikeouts, and also making a defensive miscue that led to three unearned runs.
  • Indians SP Ubaldo Jimenez struggled in a losing effort, surrendering five runs (two earned) on nine hits over four innings.
(49-59) Giants - 4 at 1 - Rays (64-45)
  • Giants SP Madison Bumgarner notched his 11th victory by tossing seven innings of one-run ball.
  • Rays SP Chris Archer gave up four runs over seven innings.
  • Giants 1B Brandon Belt went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored.
  • Rays 2B Ben Zobrist finished 2-for-3 with an RBI single.
(56-52) Yankees - 2 at 7 - Padres (51-59)
  • Padres SP Andrew Cashner pitched seven innings of two-run ball.
  • Starting on six days' rest, Yankees SP CC Sabathia gave up five runs and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
  • Padres SS Everth Cabrera went 4-for-5 with an RBI.

  • Phillies purchased the contract of RHP Zach Miner from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
  • Phillies designated RHP J.C. Ramirez for assignment.
  • Pirates optioned RHP Vic Black to Triple-A Indianapolis.
  • Pirates activated RHP Jared Hughes from the 15-day disabled list.
  • Phillies placed LHP Jonathan Pettibone on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 29, with a right shoulder strain.
  • Cubs designated OF Julio Borbon for assignment.
  • Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports that the Dodgers have placed SP Ted Lilly on unconditional release waivers.
  • Mets OF Jordany Valdespin was issued a three-game suspension at Triple-A Las Vegas for his role in a bench-clearing incident on Monday.
  • Mets purchased the contract of LHP Pedro Feliciano from Triple-A Las Vegas.
  • The Pirates are promoting prospect right-hander Jameson Taillon to Triple-A Indianapolis.
  • Mets placed LHP Josh Edgin on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 30, with a stress fracture in his ribs.
  • The Dodgers promoted SS Corey Seager to High-A Rancho Cucamonga.
American League:

  • The Braves don't yet have a timetable for OF Reed Johnson's (Achilles) return.
  • Braves SP Paul Maholm (wrist) hopes to throw a light bullpen session off the mound sometime this weekend.
  • Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said C Gerald Laird (kidney stone) needs a few more days to recover.
  • Brewers RP Tom Gorzelanny was removed from his start on Friday after just four batters, after taking a Jayson Werth line drive off of his throwing elbow.
  • Braves OF Jordan Schafer (ankle) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Gwinnett.
  • Braves OF B.J. Upton (groin) could be activated from the disabled list Saturday.
  • Phillies SP Cliff Lee (neck) will make his next start Sunday against the Braves.
  • Mets RP Bobby Parnell (neck) will be unavailable Friday and Saturday against the Royals.
  • Brewers SP Marco Estrada (hamstring) has been sent to Triple-A Nashville on a rehab assignment.
  • Mets 3B David Wright is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his right hamstring on Saturday.
  • Padres C Yasmani Grandal will undergo reconstructive ACL surgery on his right knee on August 6.
  • Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez does not expect to return to the Rockies' lineup on Saturday.

  • OF Darin Mastroianni (ankle) has been sent to the Twins' spring training complex in Fort Myers, Florida to begin a minor league rehab assignment.
  • Angels OF Peter Bourjos (wrist) took batting practice for the second consecutive day Thursday.
  • Angels SP Jason Vargas (arm) will throw a three-inning simulated game on Saturday.
  • Athletics C John Jaso (concussion) doesn't believe he'll be ready for activation this weekend.
  • Twins general manager Terry Ryan said Friday that SP Vance Worley (elbow) has resumed playing catch without any issues.
  • Blue Jays OF Melky Cabrera's (knee) MRI revealed issues with the meniscus in his left knee, and he'll head to Florida to undergo further testing.
  • Rays SP Alex Cobb (concussion, blister) is scheduled to make a minor league rehab start with Class-A Charlotte on Saturday.

  • Marlins OF Juan Pierre said he won't retire when his contract expires after this season.
  • Giants RP Guillermo Moscoso will start Sunday against the Rays.
  • Giants manager Bruce Bochy announced Friday that SP Barry Zito has been pulled from the starting rotation.
  • Mets manager Terry Collins said Friday that RP David Aardsma will close while Bobby Parnell (neck) is sidelined.
  • Phillies SP John Lannan will start Saturday against the Braves.
  • The Mets are expected to recall OF Mike Baxter on Saturday.
  • SP Jeremy Hefner will start for the Mets on Saturday after Carlos Torres had to be used in relief on Friday.
  • Mets OF Lucas Duda homered and drove home three runs during his most recent rehab game with Class-A St. Lucie on Friday.

American League:

  • CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Biogenesis suspensions will indeed be levied on Monday.
  • Angels RP Ernesto Frieri knows he's fighting to save his closer's job.
  • Mariners RP Danny Farquhar credits his new approach to a pep talk from 41-year-old catcher Henry Blanco.
  • White Sox manager Robin Ventura has used Paul Konerko exclusively as the designated hitter since the slugger returned from the disabled list on July 22.
  • Rangers manager Ron Washington indicated Friday that 2B Jurickson Profar will be used primarily in the infield, even if Nelson Cruz is suspended.
  • Astros RP Brett Oberholtzer will start Monday against the Red Sox.
  • Mariners acting manager Robby Thompson said Friday that RP Tom Wilhelmsen is out as closer for the time being.
  • The Astros have listed RP Brett Oberholtzer as a starting pitcher.
