Position Prospect of the Day: Corey Seager, SS, Dodgers (Low-A Great Lakes): 3-5, 2B, 2 HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, 2 K; plus hit tool; plus power potential; plus arm; improving actions at shortstop; good makeup; .271/.363/.471 in 70 at-bats this season.

Other notable prospect performances from April 27

“The Good”

  • Garin Cecchini, 3B, Red Sox (High-A Salem): 2-3, 2 3B, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB; solid-average hit tool; solid-average power; even though he is a fringy runner, he gets the most out of his speed due to outstanding baseball instincts.
  • Kyle Gibson, RHP, Twins (Triple-A Rochester): 6.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K; uses both two- and four-seam fastballs; plus changeup; solid-average slider potential; big frame; number-three ceiling; 27.1 IP, 21 H, 10 ER, 9 BB, 26 K in five starts this season.
  • Erik Johnson, RHP, White Sox (Double-A Birmingham): 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 7 K; I have gotten outstanding reports on Johnson, and some say he is very close to major-league ready; features plus fastball, plus slider, average curveball, usable changeup; if the opportunity arises, Johnson could be the option on the South Side this year; 31.1 IP, 18 H, 5 ER, 9 BB, 32 K in five starts.
  • Rainy Lara, RHP, Mets (Low-A Savannah): 7.1 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 K; saw him firsthand; not a prospect; uses deceptive low-three-quarters arm slot; fastball sits in low 90s with some movement; messy slider; below-average changeup; taking advantage of inexperienced hitters; 24.0 IP, 21 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 24 K in four starts this season.
  • Kyle Lobstein, LHP, Tigers (Double-A Erie): 8.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K; fringy fastball; fringy curveball; changeup with plus potential; below-average command; everything will need to go right for him to enjoy success at the highest level.
  • Adalberto Mejia, LHP, Giants (High-A San Jose): 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K; low 90s fastball; slider with solid average potential; developing changeup; developing command.
  • Jon Moscot, RHP, Reds (High-A Bakersfield): 5.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K; delivery is tough to repeat; low 90s fastball with sink; average splitter; average changeup; slider has potential, but still needs polish.
  • Aderlin Rodriguez, 3B, Mets (High-A St. Lucie): 3-4, 2 2B, 2 R, RBI, BB, K; easy plus raw power; violent swinger; could wind up a base-clogger; fringy prospect.
  • Eugenio Suarez, SS, Tigers (High-A Lakeland): 2-4, 2B, HR, 2 R, RBI; glove has plus potential; solid-average hit tool; solid-average runner; minimal power potential; .308/.390/.429 with 6 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR in 91 at-bats this season.
  • LeVon Washington, CF, Indians (Low-A Lake County): 5-5, 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI; former second-round pick; strong amateur pedigree, but has not lived up to the billing as a professional; well-below-average power and arm; fringy prospect at this point in his career.
  • Alex Wood, LHP, Braves (Double-A Mississippi): 5.0 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K; continues to get the job done at Double-A; plus fastball and changeup; deceptive delivery; 27.0 IP, 19 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 31 K in five starts this season.

“The Bad”

Josh Bell, OF, Pirates (Low-A West Virginia): 0-4, 3 K; the swing will be tested against quality velocity; 26 strikeouts in 93 at-bats this season.

“The Ugly”

Cody Buckel, RHP, Rangers (Double-A Frisco): 0.0 IP, 1 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 0 K; it has been a struggle thus far in Double-A for Buckel, but this has to be close to rock bottom.

Games of Sunday, April 28

Pitching Prospect of the Day: Nick Kingham, RHP, Pirates (High-A Bradenton): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 13 K; with a fastball-changeup combination and a good command profile, Kingman is missing plenty of bats in the Florida State League; 26.2 IP, 21 H, 9 ER, 4 BB, 33 K in five starts.

Position Prospect of the Day: Eddie Rosario, 2B, Twins (High-A Fort Myers): 2-4, 2B, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB, K, SB; plus hit tool; plus runner; developing power; developing defense; .351/.381/.546 with 6 2B, 2 3B, and 3 HR in 97 at-bats this season.

Other notable prospect performances from April 28:

“The Good”

  • Chris Bassitt, RHP, White Sox (High-A Winston-Salem): 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K; low three-quarters arm slot; fastball up to 94 with armside run; slider sits 81-83 with horizontal break and has the potential to be an average pitch; changeup and curveball will both be scrapped when he moves back to a bullpen role full time.
  • Timothy Berry, LHP, Orioles (High-A Frederick): 6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 8 K; fastball comes in at 90-92 with armside run; big-breaking curveball at 74-76 changeup sits 81-83; all three pitches have solid-average potential; 28.0 IP, 23 H, 10 ER, 4 BB, 35 K in five starts.
  • Jesse Biddle, LHP, Phillies (Double-A Reading): 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 10 K; continuing to carve up Double-A hitting; fastball worked 91-93 (T95); curveball and changeup both have plus potential. I profiled him as a back-end starter after what I had seen this spring, but if the fastball velocity continues to increase, he could be significantly more than that; 31.0 IP, 12 H, 6 ER, 12 BB, 40 K in five starts this season.
  • Mark Canha, 1B, Marlins (Double-A Jacksonville): 3-3, 2B, HR, 2 R, RBI, BB; limited to first base defensively; power to all fields; swing will be challenged by velocity; .296/.376/.543 with 3 HR in 81 at-bats this season.
  • A.J. Cole, RHP, Nationals (High-A Potomac): 6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K; fastball has plus-plus potential; curveball has plus potential; changeup will at least be a usable major-league pitch; still has front-end-of-the-rotation ceiling; 26.0 IP, 30 H, 14 ER, 6 BB, 25 K in five starts.
  • Maikel Franco, 3B, Phillies (High-A Clearwater): 2-4, 2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI; major-league bat speed; easy plus power potential; plenty of arm for third base; bottom-of-the-scale runner; barrels a ton of balls; first-division ceiling; can be a bit of a free-swinger; .296/.349/.561 with 5 HR in 98 at-bats this season.
  • Kevin Gausman, RHP, Orioles (Double-A Bowie): 7.2 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K; we all know this is my guy; fastball has elite potential; slider has potential; changeup is one of the best in the minor leagues with plus-plus potential; still working on consistent command from start to start; close to big-league ready; 28.2 IP, 31 H, 12 ER, 1 BB, 29 K in five starts.
  • Todd Glaesmann, OF, Rays (Double-A Montgomery): 3-5, 2B, HR, 2 R, 5 RBI, K; right-field profile; plus power; swing has some miss in it; can be a bit of a free-swinger; ultimate hit tool grade will determine future role.
  • Francisco Lindor, SS, Indians (High-A Carolina): 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, K; I thought he deserved to get put in here at some point. He may never put up super-flashy statistical lines, but the truth is that he is just a crazy good all-around baseball player; plus plus defender; easy plus potential hit tool; gap power; instinctual runner; excellent makeup.
  • Ivan Pineyro, RHP, Nationals (Low-A Hagerstown): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 12 K; solid-average fastball; changeup with plus potential; inconsistent curveball; excellent work ethic; had more strikeouts today than in his other four innings combined.
  • Darin Ruf, 1B/LF, Phillies (Triple-A Lehigh Valley): 4-5, 2 HR, 3 R, 5 RBI, K; expectations entering 2013 were completely unrealistic; has some raw power; will be challenged to make contact against quality pitching; plus raw power; well-below-average defender anywhere on the diamond.
  • Burch Smith, RHP, Padres (Double-A San Antonio): 5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K; fastball has plus potential; changeup could improve; 26.0 IP, 15 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 31 K in five starts.
  • Noah Syndergaard, RHP, Mets (High-A St. Lucie): 7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K; heavy fastball that sits in the mid 90s; curveball has hard downward action with plus potential; changeup taking leaps forward; 25.0 IP, 23 H, 9 ER, 10 BB, 26 K in five starts.
  • Oscar Taveras, CF, Cardinals (Triple-A Memphis): 2-2, HR, R, RBI, BB; biding his time in Triple-A until a spot in the major leagues shows itself; bat has extremely high ceiling.
  • Trayce Thompson, CF, White Sox (Double-A Birmingham): 3-6, 2B, HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, K; talked to a scout that said Thompson was not looking comfortable at the plate. He still has the raw power that will allow him to run into balls, but the swing is lengthy and it does not look bright going forward. I saw Thompson a lot in 2012, and I liked the improvements he made. At the time, I thought that he had the chance to develop into an everyday major-leaguer, but also the risk of never making his way out of Double-A.
  • Mac Williamson, OF, Giants (High-A San Jose): 2-4, 2B, HR, R, RBI, K; plus-plus raw power; plus arm; excellent work ethic; ultimate role will be decided on the amount of consistent contact he will be able to make.

“The Bad”

  • Jorge Alfaro, C, Rangers (Low-A Hickory): 0-4, 3 K; still working to be able to make consistent contact against secondary offerings.
  • Lewis Brinson, CF, Rangers (Low-A Hickory): 0-4, 4 K; still ironing out the swing-and-miss problem; 41 strikeouts in 99 at-bats this season.
  • Colton Cain, LHP, Astros (Low-A Quad Cities): 3.1 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 0 K; the big-framed Texan continues to struggle.

 “The Ugly”

Kyle Winkler, RHP, Diamondbacks (High-A Visalia): 1.1 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 1 K; tough start to the season for Winkler who continues to get hit around; 19.1 IP, 36 H, 21 ER, 13 BB, 16 K in five starts.

No surprise that a lefty named Lobstein has a "changeup with plus potential."
