Minor League Update

Games of April 27-28

by Zach Mortimer

Games of Saturday, April 27

Pitching Prospect of the Day: Anthony Ranaudo, RHP, Red Sox (Double-A Portland): 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 K; improved stuff; fastball up to 91-94 mph with good life and plane; curveball flashes plus and has hard downward break at 77-83 mph; changeup is at least average and shows good life in the zone, though he has a tendency to leave it elevated; 21.2 IP, 11 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 26 K in four starts this season.

Position Prospect of the Day: Corey Seager, SS, Dodgers (Low-A Great Lakes): 3-5, 2B, 2 HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, 2 K; plus hit tool; plus power potential; plus arm; improving actions at shortstop; good makeup; .271/.363/.471 in 70 at-bats this season.

Other notable prospect performances from April 27

“The Good”

  • Garin Cecchini, 3B, Red Sox (High-A Salem): 2-3, 2 3B, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB; solid-average hit tool; solid-average power; even though he is a fringy runner, he gets the most out of his speed due to outstanding baseball instincts.
  • Kyle Gibson, RHP, Twins (Triple-A Rochester): 6.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K; uses both two- and four-seam fastballs; plus changeup; solid-average slider potential; big frame; number-three ceiling; 27.1 IP, 21 H, 10 ER, 9 BB, 26 K in five starts this season.
  • Erik Johnson, RHP, White Sox (Double-A Birmingham): 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 7 K; I have gotten outstanding reports on Johnson, and some say he is very close to major-league ready; features plus fastball, plus slider, average curveball, usable changeup; if the opportunity arises, Johnson could be the option on the South Side this year; 31.1 IP, 18 H, 5 ER, 9 BB, 32 K in five starts.
  • Rainy Lara, RHP, Mets (Low-A Savannah): 7.1 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 K; saw him firsthand; not a prospect; uses deceptive low-three-quarters arm slot; fastball sits in low 90s with some movement; messy slider; below-average changeup; taking advantage of inexperienced hitters; 24.0 IP, 21 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 24 K in four starts this season.
  • Kyle Lobstein, LHP, Tigers (Double-A Erie): 8.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K; fringy fastball; fringy curveball; changeup with plus potential; below-average command; everything will need to go right for him to enjoy success at the highest level.
  • Adalberto Mejia, LHP, Giants (High-A San Jose): 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K; low 90s fastball; slider with solid average potential; developing changeup; developing command.
  • Jon Moscot, RHP, Reds (High-A Bakersfield): 5.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K; delivery is tough to repeat; low 90s fastball with sink; average splitter; average changeup; slider has potential, but still needs polish.
  • Aderlin Rodriguez, 3B, Mets (High-A St. Lucie): 3-4, 2 2B, 2 R, RBI, BB, K; easy plus raw power; violent swinger; could wind up a base-clogger; fringy prospect.
  • Eugenio Suarez, SS, Tigers (High-A Lakeland): 2-4, 2B, HR, 2 R, RBI; glove has plus potential; solid-average hit tool; solid-average runner; minimal power potential; .308/.390/.429 with 6 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR in 91 at-bats this season.
  • LeVon Washington, CF, Indians (Low-A Lake County): 5-5, 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI; former second-round pick; strong amateur pedigree, but has not lived up to the billing as a professional; well-below-average power and arm; fringy prospect at this point in his career.
  • Alex Wood, LHP, Braves (Double-A Mississippi): 5.0 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K; continues to get the job done at Double-A; plus fastball and changeup; deceptive delivery; 27.0 IP, 19 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 31 K in five starts this season.
