Baseball Prospectus News

The New Reality for BP Fantasy

by Joe Hamrahi

Last week we kicked off another season of fantasy baseball coverage here at Baseball Prospectus. We rolled out all the usual highly anticipated products, such as PECOTA, PFM, and updated Depth Charts. And later in the week, Rob McQuown’s brainchild, the Scoresheet Draft Aid, made its appearance for a second season here at BP. But that wasn’t all. We also introduced our preseason positional rankings series and saw debut articles from two new fantasy writers here at Baseball Prospectus. It was a good start to the new season, but it was just that, a start.

In 2013 we plan to expand and enhance our fantasy coverage to include a number of new writers, guests, and features. Jason Collette, Paul Sporer, Josh Shepardson, Rob McQuown, and Paul Singman all return to the team from last year, while Mike Gianella and Bret Sayre begin their first year at BP, bringing plenty of fantasy baseball experience with them.

The master blueprint has already been constructed, but there will be plenty of surprises along the way as well. And since our goal isn’t to leave everyone guessing, here are a few things you can expect this year from the fantasy staff at Baseball Prospectus:

  • Weekly NFBC ADP Data courtesy of Stats, Inc.
  • Top fantasy prospects by position with individual analysis
  • Positional breakdown by tiers (30-40 deep)
  • Weekly player dollar valuations
  • Players to watch in spring training
  • Top 100 Dynasty prospects list
  • Top 50 fantasy prospects for 2013
  • Weekly starting pitcher planner
  • Bullpen/closer reports
  • In-season risers and fallers
  • Value picks
  • Call-up analysis of top minor-league talents
  • Regular staff chats
  • Guest chats with industry experts such as Cory Schwartz
  • Regular Q&A sessions on Twitter with the BP fantasy staff
  • Industry roundtables
  • Coverage of all the major industry leagues, such as Tout and LABR
  • Expanded Scoresheet and simulation game (Strat-O-Matic, Dynasty, etc.) coverage

…and plenty more, including excellent freestyle articles like this one from last Friday by Mike Gianella and this one from last Wednesday by Jason Collette.

Hopefully that gives you a taste of what to expect this season and whets your appetite enough to return to the site on a regular basis. We’re determined to bring you the best coverage possible this year, and our staff is excited to jump right in. As usual, if there’s something you’d like to see, please let us know. We can’t promise to deliver everything, but we’ll do our best to try.

Now, get back to your drafts!

You folks are doing an amazing job. I'm 9 rounds into a SC draft and have used draft aid from the start. Its almost like cheating on a math test. It allows you to see the trees in the forest . And what about a little humor along the way : BP has got it. A friend has BaseballHQ. The projections are incomplete, most reports are from 2012 and the site is clunky. I have yet to find a site so good as yours and at a low price. Keep up the amazing work.

I love the PlayerLink utility on BBHQ, but otherwise I completely agree. Website clunky, especially since they sold it to USA Today. BP is the far superior site overall.

Very excited about the dynasty prospects list. Thanks for that.

Wow...me too! Awesome idea. Dynasty leagues are becoming more and more popular and you guys are recognizing that. Thanks!

Thanks guys. We're really doing our best to cover all areas with a considerable amount of attention and content.

I'm sure whatever Strat-O-Matic analysis BP can provide will be better than anything out there currently.

Yeah, I appreciate any time you help us SOM dice rollers.

Rolling dice...sigh. The many hours I spent doing that in my youth...and adulthood. I am convinced that much of my passion for baseball came from my first APBA set in 1960. SOM came later. I mean, I had All-Star Baseball with the spinner, but that didn't have all the players (although it did have old-timers). But when I saw the APBA ad on the back of Baseball Digest and sent away for it, it led me to keeping stats, analyzing stats, and thinking about players in a whole different way.

WOW!! This is all very impressive. Thank you for all the Fantasy content that you are putting out. Just curious? What made you go in the direction of full blown Fantasy goodness? 5 years ago did you envision having all the content that you are releasing this year? I love Tower of Power Fantasy Hour and I am excited about the upcoming content. Keep up the great work.

Thanks! I think we always wanted to build out a strong offering but didn't have the right mix of people or just the amount of people we have now. The production of fantasy products is a natural extension of our regular content so there's no reason why we shouldn't be making it available.

Feb 18, 2013 13:42 PM

After looking at that list I feel almost guilty paying so little. Are you guys going to pass the collection plate around for a second time? Thank you for feeding our Fantasy baseball addiction.

We don't plan to, but if you want to ask some friends to purchase subscriptions, we'd be very grateful :)

I'd really *really* like to see the resurrection of UPSIDE, particularly so that you can do something like this again: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=5836

Sorry--we would like to bring it back but we aren't going to be able to get it done in 2013.

Feb 18, 2013 18:53 PM

I'm sorry to hear that. I really hope it's back in 2014. It is, in my opinion, BP's most valuable tool.

What is the ETA for PECOTA long-term projections?

Do the so-called "expert" or "industry" leagues still use the ancient, discredited Batting Average as a category?...i.e. still "do what we say, not what we do"?

They are a mixed bag. I've played in one with a mix of bloggers and Yahoo! writers where their was discussion about changing batting average to on-base percentage. Hopefully some of the other writers can speak to their experience, but I've enjoyed including OBP in one of my leagues with friends.

Feb 19, 2013 16:22 PM

This will be year no. 26 for our AL-only league (which now technically has 16 owners, so we also use the NL West, but I digress . . . ), and we're making the switch this year from BA to OBP. We're also adding runs and strike-outs to complement the regular (i.e., HR, RBI, SB, ERA, WHIP, W, and Sv) categories.

Any information on when the positional breakdown by tiers will be published?
