The Mets' Bullpen Doesn't Blow It

by Ben Lindbergh

This is exactly how the Mets drew up the top of the ninth inning on Sunday night:

Behold, the power of pitching to the scoreboard! With that five-run inning, the Mets' relief corps not only nailed down the victory, but passed the Brewers to claim baseball's highest bullpen ERA (5.02). Congratulations to Francisco, Miguel Batista, Manny Acosta, and the many other Mets relievers who made this moment possible.

Sandy Alderson has failed to build a bullpen for two years running. I'm sure he'll be shopping from the trash bin again this winter.

Some good bullpens have been built from trash bins! But this isn't one of them.

Sounds like he owes the Marlins a call. Heath Bell is just the solution to the Mets' bullpen "success."

Even better, that "J. Heyward struck out swinging" included a dropped third strike and errant throw to first before he was finally retired.

Yes, it was a very generous swing, and a very close call at first.

They arranged all this so Rauch could get a save. Plus all those holds!
