Minor League Update: Games of July 11

Kaleb Cowart, 3B, Angels (High-A Inland Empire): 3-for-4, 2 HR (3), 2 R, 3 RBI, BB, K.

There have been a lot of young breakouts in the minors this year, and it's almost like Cowart has gotten lost in the shuffle. Promoted to High-A in June just weeks after his 20^th birthday, Cowart is hitting .290/.432/.551in his first 20 California League games, and the scouting reports nearly match the numbers.

KG - Is Cowart getting close to being in the conversation with Castellanos and Arenado as best minor league third base prospect?

Interesting that Arenado did not even crack Keith Law's midseason top 50. I am curious as to how Kevin sees this, as I am sure he has a list for us coming in the not too distant future.

Have scouts been saying good things on Keenyn Walker, or is there still a lot of skepticism there? What about the ChiSox other 1st round toolsy OF, Jared Mitchell?

Just curious: Billy Hamilton has been caught stealing over 20 times this year, at A ball. How does a guy who can steal a base on a pickoff attempt, a guy whom all the scouts say has more speed than anyone, how does a guy like that get caught 20+ times with A ball pitchers and catchers?

Because EVERYBODY knows he is going to be stealing nearly every time? And he still is safe 80% of the time. It would be like a pitcher telling you his pitch and still striking you out.

Come on. Everyone describes him as having the speed to be successful on pitchouts, pickoffs, etc. With all due respect, A ball pitchers and catchers -- while infinitely superior than 99.99 of us -- should not be able to catch someone like that 20+ times. Even when they know he's running. Just seems odd.

split the sample in half and he has 51 steals and 10 caught stealings...it just looks high because of the sheer volume of stolen bases.

Is it really that much easier to steal in the minors? I would expect that pitchers time to home isn't something that is much different in A ball that the majors. Big league pitchers may throw a few MPH harder than minor leaguers, but that is a very minimal difference in time to the plate.

Same for catchers arms, the throw the second is pretty basic as is the mechanics of the release. I would think any difference is going to be minimal.

As a quick comp, look at Vince Coleman's numbers in A. He stole 145 bases and was caught 31 times, so in that respect Hamilton looks good.

Ramsey was widely perceived as an overdraft, while Wacha was thought to have fallen a few slots below where his talent might have placed him. Interesting that with them now in the same organization, their levels are reversed, although my understanding is that Wacha is expected to move up to the FSL soon.

vogelbach actually got in 6 AZL games last season. so these aren't technically his first 15 pro games. just sayin

Vogelbach did get a SB the other day too. Could have the back end of a double but you never know. Maybe he is light on his feet despite the size.

Texas farm is absolutely ridiculous and now with $ being spent by Tex, this could be a nice long run for the Rangers. Anyone have a word on Schoop? I'm trying to see if anyone thinks SD would send Headley to BMore for Schoop?
