  • Chris Bostick, 2B, Athletics (Short-season Vermont): 2-for-5, HR (1), R, RBI. Great sleeper with athleticism and upside.
  • Gary Brown, OF, Giants (Double-A Richmond): 3-for-6, 2B, R, 2 RBI, SB. Needs a big second half to retain his prospect status; .247/.320/.314 in 71 games.
  • Jeimer Candelario, 3B, Cubs (Short-season Boise): 3-for-4, HR (2), R, 2 RBI, BB. Home runs in back-to-back games and 17 total bases in seven games as a 18-year-old in college-heavy league.
  • Wilmer Font, RHP, Rangers (High-A Myrtle Beach): 6 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K. 22-year-old Venezuelan has power arm and getting on a roll; 16 IP, 6 H, 4 BB, 17 K in last three starts.
  • Anthony Gose, OF, Blue Jays (Triple-A Las Vegas): 3-for-4, 2B, R, RBI, BB, K, 2 SB. Hit .216 in May but .333/.410/.502 in 48 games since.
  • Billy Hamilton, SS, Reds (High-A Bakersfield): 4-for-5, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB. 2 SB (82). Hitting .369 with 25 stolen bases in 17 June games; .331/.416/.447 overall and it would be interesting to see what he could do at Double-A in the second half.
  • Luis Heredia, LHP, Pirates (Short-season State College): 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K. 17-year-old is well ahead of schedule; huge upside remains.
  • Junior Lake, SS/3B, Cubs (Double-A Tennessee): 4-for-5, 2B, R, K, SB. Scouts have noted big progress offensively; 17-for-41 in last ten games and .318/.370/.480 overall.
  • Hak-Ju Lee, SS, Rays (Double-A Montgomery): 3-for-5, 2B, R, K, SB. Hitting .303 with 10 stolen bases in June; .249/.316/.319 overall, so need to stay hot.
  • Manny Machado, SS, Orioles (Double-A Bowie): 3-for-4, HR (4), R, 4 RBI, BB. Numbers aren't eye-popping, but scouting reports remain glowing; .249/.333/.375 in 68 games.
  • Mikie Mahtook, OF, Rays (High-A Charlotte): 3-for-4, 2B, 3B, R, RBI. Power just hasn't been as expected; .282/.339/.396 in 67 games.
  • Rafael Ortega, OF, Rockies (High-A Modesto): 5-for-5, 2B, R, RBI, SB. Plus defender needs to develop more secondary skills; .301/.348/.419 in 53 games.
  • Ariel Ovando, OF, Astros (Rookie-level Greenville): 4-for-5, 2 2B, 3B, 3 R, 3 RBI, K. 18-year-old Dominican has ugly approach but big offensive upside; 7-for-13 in first three games.
  • Joe Panik, SS, Giants (High-A San Jose): 3-for-5, HR (3), 2 R, 3 RBI, K. 17-for-42 (.405) during ten-game hitting streak that has lifted averages to .264/.341/.381.
  • Martin Perez, LHP, Rangers (Triple-A Round Rock): 9 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K. Needs just 90 pitches for complete game in second straight outstanding start.
  • Travis Snider, OF, Blue Jays (Triple-A Las Vegas): 2-for-5, HR (8), R, 2 RBI, K, CS. Might be bashing his way back to Toronto with home runs in three straight games; .345/.431/.647 overall in 31 contests.
  • Dan Straily, RHP, Athletics (Triple-A Sacramento): 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K. One of this year's biggest breakout pitchers shows no signs of slowing down in Triple-A debut.

Good stuff, KG! Really encouraged by Panik's surge of late -- I was pretty close to giving up hope.

Any indication from scouts about a cause behind Gary Brown's struggles, or is it as simple as him facing superior pitching?

Really surprised Billy Hamilton wasn't promoted at the break. Any sense of what's going on there? Is a move to CF in the offing?

The Reds' lack of interest in promoting Hamilton is discouraging. Seems like the guy has been around forever, yet is still in high A. Someone in that org needs to make a decision about this guy

Yeah, he's been around for so long he played in the 19th century! Or maybe he's 21 and they don't need to rush a SS, 2B, or a CF right now.

Anyone else think that Martin Perez saw Jason's article and said i'll show him!

Cubs starting to get quite a slew of 3B prospects. Lake, Vitters, Baez, and Candelario. Be interesting to see how this shakes out in the next 3 years.

It'll shake out the way it always does - they'll keeop the worst one of the bunch, and everyone who turns out to be worth a damn they'll trade for nothing useful.

I think you missed the "Under New Management" sign hanging in the front window. Come on in to the new store, the product on the shelves is getting turned over in a hurry.

I think you need to lay off the "New Management" Kool-Aid. This is the same ol' dreck - except now it also has a ML worst record.

If you're so pessimistic about their chances regardless of the management change, why bother commenting then?

Is Straily profiling as a #3 if he keeps progressing and stays healthy?

With Castro firmly entrenched at SS, does Lake project for enough power to profile at 3B or do you see him playing another position?

Is Straily looking like a top 100 guy going into 2013? Top 75?

I find it interesting that these updates are featuring a much smaller fraction of Cardinals prospects than earlier in the season. Pure coincidence, or is there a reason? I rather suspect that Kolten Wong and Oscar Taveras aren't surprises any more; by now it is quite obvious that day-in, day-out, they're durn good. And Shelby Miller hasn't done much to justify his top-prospect status this year (yet). But the disappearance of the others intrigues and puzzles me.

It's not that interesting.

This is a daily update and Oscar Taveras went 0-4 yesterday.
Though 12-37(.324) 4-2B, 1-3B 1-HR, 5-RBI, 6/5-K/BB and 1-SB over his last 10 is damn good, esp. for a guy that 20 yrs and 2 days old.

Don't misunderstand, I wasn't complaining. More than anything else I was just wondering whether the bloom was off the rose with some of those guys -- not Taveras and Wong, whose performance has been enough to get them into the Futures game, but rather, some of the others in the Cardinals' system who'd been appearing here earlier but aren't as frequently now.

I think as BPKevin points out, usually if a prospect isn't included, it means they didn't have a great night, or at least one that caught the eye. It doesn't necessarily mean they've bottomed out - KG normally will do an article a week, or every two weeks, about guys in deep slumps. But I also think he's said in the past that he doesn't have quotas for teams, and teams with weaker farm systems might not get a guy mentioned for days.

Any thoughts on Wyatt Mathisen, the Pirates 2nd rounder. I know it's small sample, but he's off to a hot start in the GCL. Was just wondering if he's top 10 org material. Does he move ahead of Tony Sanchez as the top catching prospect? (though he's obviously further away)

New White Sox pick Barnum putting on quite a display at Bristol. Is he really 6'5", 225 out of HS? Sounds like a future Tony Clark. I hope he can be a permanent fixture at some point.
