Since 2011, the left-handed pitchers who have faced the highest percentage of left-handed batters:

  1. Will Ohman: .650 career OPS against lefties
  2. Matt Reynolds: .471
  3. Rafael Perez: .676
  4. Mike Gonzalez: .616
  5. Javier Lopez: .630
Since 2011, the right-handed pitchers who have faced the lowest percentage of left-handed batters:

  2. Sergio Romo: .555
  3. Brad Ziegler: .891

Sergio Romo could make $5 million per year as a lefty specialist. Sergio Romo could make $5 million per year as a righty specialist. It's almost like Sergio Romo should just be allowed to pitch to everybody

Love Sergio (seriously, look at last year's numbers), but the Giants are very careful with him because of his elbow - there's been a great bit of scuttlebut about him pitching on back to back days or generally being handled with kid gloves.

He's easily the best reliever on the team, but there's a reason they are careful with him.

And what exactly makes you think that a whopping 62 career IP vs. left-handed batters is predictive of future split performance? Even if you ignore the research and assume his past splits are predictive, his xFIP (generally considered a better predictor than FIP for small samples) vs. LHB is 3.93, and it's 2.46 vs. RHB. Seems like the Giants might actually know a bit more about platoon splits than you do..

The tone of this is so confrontational. What's the point of that? I'd minus this except the data points are too good to lose. But let's try to be more civil, eh?

Not having watched a lot of Giants games, I was curious about Romo's weird IP/G split last year (65 G/48 IP), which seems like they treated him more as a specialist.

Maybe they have been picking spots and having him avoid the toughest left handed bats? Also keep in mind they've had Javier Lopez as LOOGY, and he allowed a stingy 430 OPS against LHB last year.

Also keep in mind that the Giants had 10 guys listed as relievers last year, per baseball reference. 6 of those 10 guys (Wilson, Romo, Affeldt, Lopez, Runzler, Edlefsen) averaged less than an inning per game pitched. Maybe it's all just Bochy.

Evo, you might be right, but I don't see a need to be rude to Sam in order to disagree with his point.
