Jose Campos, RHP, Yankees (Low-A Charleston): 5 IP, 0 H, 1 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 8 K.

At the time of the Jesus Montero/Michael Pineda deal, there was so much star power involved that Campos was merely just the other guy. A 19-year-old Venezuelan who ranked fifth in the Mariners system prior to the deal, Campos showed a low-90s fastball that got up to 96 mph in the Northwest League last year, to go with the size and delivery of a classic power pitcher. While his secondary pitches are promising, they still need refining, but he's dominating Sally League hitters so far, allowing just one hit over his first 11 innings. He's not just the other guy, and if he stays healthy, he's likely an easy Top 101 prospect next year.

Others Of Note:

  • Xavier Avery, OF, Orioles (Triple-A Norfolk): 3-for-6, HR (1), 2 R, 2 RBI, K. Speedster is among youngest players in league, but ceiling might be good fourth outfielder.
  • Josh Bell, OF, Pirates (Low-A West Virginia): 2-for-4, HR (1), 2 R, 3 RBI. First home run of professional career; six strikeouts in first two games, but only three since.
  • Dellin Betances, RHP, Yankees (Triple-A Empire State): 3.1 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 6 BB, 3 K. Just 44 of 89 pitches for strikes while allowing three home runs.
  • Madison Boer, RHP, Twins (Low-A Beloit): 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 9 K. 2011 second-round pick is big, physical righty with power arsenal, including low-90s heat.
  • Jorge Bonifacio, OF, Royals (Low-A Kane County): 2-for-4, 2B, R, K. Fifth straight two-hit game; 10-for-21 overall.
  • Archie Bradley, RHP, Diamondbacks (Low-A South Bend): 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 7 K. First-round pick has been nothing short of outstanding, and has been as impressive as any 2011 draftee.
  • Ryan Brett, 2B, Rays (Low-A Bowling Green): 3-for-6, 2B, R, RBI. Small second baseman who can really hit; second three-hit game of the season.
  • Bobby Bundy, RHP, Orioles (Double-A Bowie): 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K. Not his brother, but a solid pitching prospect in his own right.
  • Dylan Bundy, RHP, Orioles (Low-A Delmarva): 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K. Has retired all 18 batters he's faced so far with 12 strikeouts; spoke to scout at the game and will have more in the first scouting notebook of the year next week.
  • A.J. Burnett, RHP, Pirates (High-A Bradenton): 1.2 IP, 5 H, 8 R (5 ER), 1 BB, 4 K. Well that didn't go very well.
  • Wellington Castillo, C, Cubs (Triple-A Iowa): 3-for-3, 2B, HR (1), 3 R, RBI, BB. A big year could make Geovany Soto expendable.
  • Kole Calhoun, OF, Angels (Triple-A Salt Lake): 3-for-4, 2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, K. Not the best time to be a good hitting outfielder at the upper levels of the Angels system.
  • Lonnie Chisenhall, 3B, Indians (Triple-A Columbus): 2-for-4, HR (3), R, 2 RBI, 2 K. 10-for-28 with 20 total bases, but concern is about plate discipline and he's yet to draw a walk.
  • Adam Conley, LHP, Marlins (Low-A Greensboro): 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R (0 ER), 1 BB, 8 K. 2011 second-round pick has 0.00 ERA in 11 innings with 15 strikeouts; fastball has above-average velocity and sink.
  • Daniel Fields, OF, Tigers (High-A Lakeland): 3-for-3, 2B, HR (1), R, RBI, BB, SB. In his third straight year at Lakeland yet still just 21; make-or-break season for his dwindling prospect status as at some point we can't keep talking about how athletic he is.
  • Michael Foltynewicz, RHP, Astros (Low-A Lexington): 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K. 2010 first-round pick is repeating the level, and this is the best start of his career.
  • Tyler Goeddel, 3B, Rays (Low-A Bowling Green): 2-for-5, 2B, R, RBI, 2 K. $1.5 million third baseman from 2011 draft sure looks the part, and is more advanced than originally anticipated.
  • Brad Hand, LHP, Marlins (Triple-A New Orleans): 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 10 K. Off-season moves forced him back to Triple-A; 0.00 ERA in 11 innings with 17 strikeouts.
  • Adeiny Hechavarria, SS, Blue Jays (Triple-A Las Vegas): 3-for-5, 2B, 3 R, K. 13-for-28 in six games; even with inflated stats of Vegas, this seems like progress.
  • Luke Jackson, RHP, Rangers (Low-A Hickory): 4 IP, 2 H, 2 R (1 ER), 4 BB, 7 K. Forty-fifth overall pick in the 2010 draft struggled here last year; 15 strikeouts in first nine innings.
  • Brandon Jacobs, OF, Red Sox (High-A Salem): 3-for-4, 2B, RBI, K, SB. First multi-hit game; seven whiffs and zero walks in 21 at-bats.
  • Casey Kelly, RHP, Padres (Triple-A Tucson): 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K. Generated encouraging reports this spring; career-high strikeouts in nearly impossible place to pitch.
  • Matt LaPorta, 1B, Indians (Triple-A Columbus): 1-for-4, HR (4), R, RBI, K. Turning it around, or 4A hitter? You decide.
  • Seth Maness, RHP, Cardinals (High-A Palm Beach): 7 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K. Minor sleeper as an undersized righty with not much in the way of stuff but outstanding command and control.
  • Ethan Martin, RHP, Dodgers (Double-A Chattanooga): 4 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 7 BB, 1 K. I don't think we can call this progress.
  • Trey McNutt, RHP, Cubs (Double-A Tennessee): 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K. Encouraging . . .
  • Tyler Moore, 1B, Nationals (Triple-A Syracuse): 2-for-3, HR (2), R, 2 RBI, 2 BB. Home runs in back-to-back games, but the two walks is almost more notable.
  • Derek Norris, C, Athletics (Triple-A Sacramento): 2-for-4, 2B, R, 2 K. Not sure what is weirder, that Norris is hitting .393, or that he's yet to walk in 28 at-bats.
  • Marcell Ozuna, OF, Marlins (High-A Jupiter): 2-for-5, HR (2), R, 4 RBI, 3 K. Kind of confused as to why he's hitting sixth in Hammerheads lineup; maybe because he was 0-for-11 with 6 Ks in previous three games.
  • James Paxton, LHP, Mariners (Double-A Jackson): 4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K. Opposing batters now 6-for-36 against him with 17 strikeouts.
  • Chris Reed, LHP, Dodgers (High-A Rancho Cucamonga): 4 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 7 K. 2011 first-round pick has 13 strikeouts in nine innings, but has given up six runs along the way.
  • Donn Roach, RHP, Angels (High-A Inland Empire): 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 7 K. 2010 third-rounder impressed in bullpen last year; second straight impressive start.
  • Trayvon Robinson, OF, Mariners (Triple-A Tacoma): 3-for-6, RBI, 3 K, SB. Should get another chance if Mariners offense remains sleepy.
  • John Stilson, RHP, Blue Jays (High-A Dunedin): 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K. Was a potential first-round pick last year before pre-draft shoulder issues were revealed; two hits allowed in seven shutout innings so far.
  • Michael Taylor, OF, Athletics (Triple-A Sacramento): 3-for-4, 3 2B, R, K. Five doubles in last two games and .452/.486/.742 in seven overall; A's outfield situation has gone from wide open to “it's complicated.”
  • Tyler Thornburg, RHP, Brewers (Double-A Huntsville): 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R (0 ER), 1 BB, 6 K. Second straight excellent start; continuing to convert the doubters.
  • Mike Trout, OF, Angels (Triple-A Salt Lake): 2-for-6, 3B, 2 R, RBI, K. Drops average to .433 in seven games.
  • Logan Verrett, RHP, Mets (Low-A Savannah): 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R (3 ER), 0 BB, 10 K. Last year's third-round pick has more finesse than stuff, and coming out of a major D-I program (Baylor), he should be dominating Sally League hitters.
  • Drew Vettleson, OF, Rays (Low-A Bowling Green): 3-for-6, SB. First hits in five days, and yet to have an extra-base knock in 21 at-bats.
  • Josh Vitters, 3B, Cubs (Triple-A Iowa): 2-for-3, R, 2 RBI. Third straight multi-hit game and 9-for-20 on the season; with Rizzo on the same team, he's playing third base only.
  • Austin Wood, RHP, Angels (Low-A Cedar Rapids): 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K. The big story on opening day with an impressive follow-up; the stuff is outstanding, but consistency issues dogged him in college.

If Trout keep hitting below .500, will he ever see any action in the majors?

Kevin, have you heard any updates regarding the severity of Rendon's ankle injury?

He has a partial fracture, which actually sounds much worse than it is. He's getting reexamined.

Chisenhall does have one walk this year.

"He's yet to draw a walk." The walk was intentional.

Does Derek Norris' line so far indicate a change in approach or is it all small sample size? Obviously a batting average based on 28 AB isn't very meaningful, but the fact that he gets a lot of hits and no walks is still a complete reversal from his previous stats.

I'd make no assumptions from it yet.

I'd be interested in what the scouts might be saying about M. Taylor's and D. Norris' unusual starts.

So if Dylan Bundy retires 9 more hitters, he's thrown a "perfect game" to start his career. He might be peaking too early.
