Farewell, [Current Marlins Stadium Name]

by Larry Granillo

Today marks the final game at the original home of the Florida Marlins, Sun Life Stadium. It wasn't the best stadium for baseball, but it did see some shining moments - a pair of Florida no-hitters, Mike Piazza's brief cameo, and, above all, Game 7 of the 1997 World Series.

Apparently Bud Selig and the rest of Major League Baseball are sad to see the stadium go, too. I've obtained a copy of the "farewell" card the Office of the Commissioner sent to Jeffrey Loria earlier this week. It's very touching. The number of executives and former players Selig was able to get to sign the card before sending it on is amazing. It's clear just how much the whole of baseball will miss Sun Life Stadium next season.

Such a sweet, colorful card.

I'm glad Bud was able to find so many players and execs to show how much they care for the stadium.

It kind of brings a tear to your eye, doesn't it?

This card is perfect. Mr. Marlin Jeff Conine who else do you need?

Funny thing is, having gotten into baseball in the late 90s/early 00s, I always mentally associate Conine with the Orioles, not the Marlins.

You know, whenever I think about Jeff Conine in 2011...

Heh, nicely done.

We had a fully built stadium that, while not perfect, was adequate for the job. Now, we have a shiny new $600M 'baseball' stadium. The only difference is that the 10k fans that show up will not get rained on.

Perhaps there will be a few more signatures on the card saying goodbye to Mr. Loria (one can only hope) ...
