Tater Trot Tracker

Trot Times for July 22

by Larry Granillo

Apologies for not putting up Thursday's trots yesterday. There were only twelve home runs hit that day, but the day was too busy to fit them in. The times are included below. There were a few more hit Friday night. Fans in Cincinnati even got to see back-to-back home runs hit in two different innings, once by the Braves and once by the Reds. That doesn't happen all that often.

Let's get to those trots!

Home Run of the Day: John Lannan, Washington Nationals - 21.88 seconds [video]
Not sure I need to say much here. Lannan's first career home run came in Dodger Stadium and was, technically, the game-winning RBI. Now that's earning the win!

The two notable home runs on Thursday were off the bat of Albert Pujols, who watched his home run worse than usual (video), and Jhonny Peralta, whose home run ball made a little girl in the crowd immensely happy (video). Going along with my piece on Friday, I much preferred the Peralta shot.

Slowest Trot: J.P. Arencibia #1, Toronto Blue Jays - 25.54 seconds [video]
Nelson Cruz hit a home run in this game en route to eight RBIs, but it was J.P. Arencibia who came through with the multi-home run game. Even better, Arencibia came through with the two slowest trots of the day on Friday.

Quickest Trot: David Freese, St. Louis Cardinals - 18.79* seconds [video]
The asterisk on this trot time is there to represent an approximate time, but I'm pretty confident in it's accuracy. If you watch the linked highlight (from the St. Louis broadcast), it doesn't show Freese crossing home plate. In the Pittsburgh feed, the camera is focused on the pitcher when you can see Freese crossing in the background. Freese crosses behind the pitcher half a step or so after the plate but, considering how fast Freese is moving, this doesn't introduce much delay. Whatever the case, Freese is clearly the quickest trotter of the day, besting Vernon Wells by more than half a second.
