Just a quick note on our draft coverage today: Kevin Goldstein's final draft projection will be up around midday, as he tweaks it until the last possible minute. At 5 PM, join him here for a pre-draft chat of one hour. Following that, head over to ESPN to chat with Kevin during the draft. Rejoin us after the day's final picks, as 30 minutes after the draft, Kevin will return for a post-draft chat, which we will schedule as soon as the timing becomes clear. As always, the chats are open to all comers, subscribers and non-subscribers alike. I hope you enjoy the draft and Kevin's coverage. I also hope that your team gets something good. The team I follow doesn't even have a pick, its management having punted its first-rounder on Rafael Soriano. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Also, DURING the draft, I'll be chatting over at ESPN.

Evil Empire #2 strikes again.

How many places do you expect my mind to absorb simultaneously?

Where is it, anyway?

I've added that to the above.

Is ESPN like another Fangraphs-type spinoff or something? Whatever, Google will probably know.

Is this still happening?

I couldn't find it, so one more time, a visit to ESPN.com turns out to be a waste of my time.

Is it strange that there is a part of me that sort of misses listening to the old conference call style of the draft?

Stupid question: Is there an internal database that MLB shows to the teams real time, to show who's available and who hasn't picked? Is it just up to the teams to follow and take note of who's picked on their internal software?

I like that question.

Yes, there's a console they're all logged into with an ID system. Still, at some point, just like in your fantasy draft, when it gets late somebody will take someone already taken. It's happened.

Do the other teams laugh and call them names? Because....that would be awesome.

If it's anything like fantasy drafts, there's also somebody making puns on every player's name as he get's taken. So I hope that's true as well.

Only guarantee is Tommy Lasorda announcing picks in an entertaining way.

Who generally reads the picks on the conference call, the GM? Scouting director? I ask because the last two years whoever has done it for the Phillies likes to YELL HIS PICK SO EVERYONE CAN HEAR IT.

All over the place. Sometimes it's the scouting director, sometimes it changes, sometimes in the late rounds you let an intern do it for giggles.

Re: Same as the old boss -
Have your whine over Soriano, but don't expect sympathy from non-Yankee fans. Here's another saying, "you win some, you lose some." Buying free agents has been the Yankees' modus operandi since the earliest days of free agency and have won the most championships in that time period as a result (with due credit for doing some other things well). I recall back in the winter before the 1978 season, the Yankees already had one of the best relievers in baseball (Sparky Lyle then, just as they have Mariano Rivera now), and they went out and bought up Goose Gossage anyway. That worked out very nicely for them.

I'm not really whining over it as a Yankees fan, but as a fan of good team management. This was a decision that was widely first-guessed as a bad one, and that it has seemingly played out (seemingly because even with Soriano's injury it's something of a rush to judgment) that way is not satisfying but frustrating.
