Tater Trot Tracker

Trot Times for June 4

by Larry Granillo

The dangers of having a single, national broadcast for a game reared it's head yesterday, when two home runs in the same game were wiped off the Tater Trot Tracker board because the national broadcast chose not to follow the runner. When a game has two feeds broadcasting it (i.e., the home and away feeds), I can usually switch over to the other team's feed to see a different look at the home run (while the celebrating team often shows positive crowd reactions, the opponent tends to show more matter-of-fact trotting). I wasn't able to do that for either Matt Kemp's first home run or Joey Votto's home run yesterday. I always feel incomplete when that happens.

Enough of that. Let's get to the trots!

Home Run of the Day: Robinson Cano, New York Yankees - 20.45 seconds [video]
There were a lot of candidates for the Home Run of the Day. Albert Pujols hit a walkoff home run as his second of the day. Matt Kemp hit an eighth-inning, game-tying grand slam. Miguel Cabrera hit a late-inning, opposite-field go-ahead home run. But none of those home runs featured Torii Hunter jumping, full-body, at the wall to make the play only to discover that the wall wasn't there and to then land on top of a Yankees fan. Until those home runs could feature something as entertaining as that play, Robinson Cano's blast will stand.

Seriously. Go watch that play from Hunter. You'll be happier for doing so.

Slowest Trot: Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers - 27.67 seconds [video]
I already mentioned Cabrera's ninth-inning blast above, so I'll just mention his trot here. Cabrera is one of the more inconsistent slow trotters, often showing everyone a 23- or 24-second trot before going back to his 27- or 28-second trot ways. Not that I blame Miggy for his slow trot today. I am a bit confused about his little deke at third base there. It's at least the second time I've seen him do it in recent weeks. Is he really mis-judging his trot line that much? Or is it the newest form of tater trot style?

Quickest Trot: Gordon Beckham, Chicago White Sox - 19.29 seconds [video]
It's a shame Votto's trot was cut off on the national broadcast. We saw him a number of steps past home plate in the 20-second range. It's obvious he stepped on home under 20-seconds, but did he do it fast enough to beat Beckham? Impossible to know thanks.
