Episode 50: You Do Want To Be A Ferris Wheel!

by Kevin Goldstein

We could get all flowery with words here, but it's the one-year anniversary show, and we got Scott Boras and Jose Altuve. 'Nuff said.

Note: We do alert you to the presence of the occasional adult language and subject matter. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Scott Boras! I thought so. When you said "secretary" in Episode 49, I just had a feeling that it had to be him.

I can't wait to listen!

The Boras interview is one of the funniest things I've ever heard. I wonder if he believes the stuff he's saying about players "giving away their right to an education" and the like. It's patently absurd.

Send am email about this. I'd love to respond.

That portion of the interview did strike me as disingenuous, but this is a guy whose job relies on creating leverage for his clients. So it's in his best interest to magnify every opportunity cost for the players involved because their compensation from the team scales accordingly.

I completely agree. Doesn't make his comments any more cogent.

Maybe I misunderstood him, but wasn't he speaking in terms of how to convey to a player the importance of saving his bonus money, when he made that comment? It seems like a reasonable thing to explain to a kid that his bonus money may need to last 30 years, as he will earn less money than if he had gotten an education. Maybe I misunderstood the education comment, but that is how I heard it. Not sure why that would cause annoyance other than he is Scott Boras.

Although Boras was speaking of giving up the chance at a scholarship to go to play baseball, there is some truth in his statement once an athlete attends college on scholarship.

I know as far as basketball and football scholarships go, almost all of the kids do not get to take the classes they want to. Rather, they get are made to take the "easy track" to keep them eligable. If it's happening for big time basketball and football programs, I'm sure it would be happening for big time baseball programs as well. I understand that the "student athlete" is getting an education, but many times it's not the education they want, so in that sense sometimes they are giving up rights.
