Marcel Ozuna, OF, Marlins (Low-A Greenboro): 1-for-4, HR (5), R, 2 RBI.

After flopping in the Sally League last year, Ozuna showed up again in the New York-Penn League and went on a power tear with 21 home runs in 68 games. The holes in his swing have always been a concern for scouts, and he looked like he might be in for another tough time in the full-season leagues, going 3-for-30 with 13 strikeouts in his first nine games for the Grasshoppers. Since then, he's been on a tear, going 11-for-20 with a double and five home runs to lift his OPS 613 points in the span of five games to .280/.362/.640. So in just two week, we've seen the good, we've seen the bad, and we're left wondering which one we'll see more of for the remainder of the season.

Others Of Note:

  • Gary Brown, OF, Giants (High-A San Jose): 3-for-4, 2B, RBI, 2 SB, CS. Hitting .333 and running wild with 12 stolen bases, but wild is the key word as he's also been caught five times.
  • Mark Cahoon, LHP, Mets (Double-A Birmingham): 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R (0 ER), 0 BB, 11 K. Doesn't have the stuff to project as more than a back-end starter, but he throws strikes, gets ground balls and really understands his craft.
  • Khris Davis, OF, Brewers (High-A Brevard County): 3-for-3, HR (4), 2 R, RBI. One of those older, bat-only college players, but has true plus power and is slugging .596 in the Florida State League. Belongs in Double-A.
  • Wilmer Flores, SS, Mets (High-A St. Luicie): 3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI. Eight hits in last five games; questions about power and position remain.
  • Jedd Gyorko, 3B, Padres (High-A Lake Elsinore): 2-for-3, RBI. 14-for-29 during eight-game hitting streak and .385/.486/.558 overall with more walks than strikeouts.
  • Jae-Hoon Ha, OF, Cubs (High-A Daytona): 2-for-5, 2B, R, RBI. Multi-hit effort actually drops his batting average to .414; still zero walks in 58 at-bats.
  • Bryce Harper, OF, Nationals (Low-A Hagerstown): 2-for-5, 2B, 2 R, K. First multi-hit game in ten days; hitting .250/.340/.364 in 13 games and his stock isn't down a bit because of it, as the tools are still insane.
  • Eric Hosmer, 1B, Royals (Triple-A Omaha): 2-for-3, 2B, 3 R, 2 BB. Has reached base 12 times in his last four games and hitting .415/.492/.547 overall; if Kila doesn't get hot, the pressure will be on very soon.
  • Brett Jackson, OF, Cubs (Double-A Tennessee): 3-for-4, 2B, 3B, HR (2), R, 3 RBI, BB, K. Lining himself up for a move to Triple-A at some point in the season and maybe even Wrigley by September; .417/.544/.721 in 13 games.
  • A.J. Jimenez, C, Blue Jays (High-A Dunedin): 2-for-4, HR (2), R, 3 RBI, K. Yet another impressive catcher in the Toronto system; .366/.395/.634 in 11 games and shuts down the running game.
  • Jose Martinez, OF, White Sox (High-A Winston-Salem): 2-for-3, 2 2B, BB. Once a highly-rated prospect whose career has been sidetracked by numerous injuries; .417/.481/.583 in 12 games.
  • Andrew Miller, LHP, Red Sox (Triple-A Pawtucket): 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K. First start with fewer walks than innings pitched.
  • Jesus Montero, C, Yankees (Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre): 3-for-5, 2B, K. Hitting .423 in 11 games, but over-aggressive approach from the spring has carried over, as he's yet to draw a walk in 52 at-bats.
  • Mike Moustakas, 3B, Royals (Triple-A Omaha): 1-for-3, HR (2), 2 RBI, 2 BB. Eight-game hitting streak, but just one hit each time.
  • Wynn Pelzer, RHP, Orioles (Double-A Bowie): 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 6 K. Moved back into a starting role, Pelzer has given up just three hits over 14 innings, and has big league stuff, but ability to locate his pitches remains an issue.
  • Anthony Rizzo, 1B, Padres (Triple-A Tucson): 3-for-4, 2 R, HR (4), 2 RBI, BB. Up to .436/.483/.764 in 13 games, including 13-for-22 with 23 total bases in his last six.
  • Clint Robinson, DH, Royals (Triple-A Omaha): 4-for-4, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB. Older guy who many see has a 4A-type, but hitting .404/.500/.766 after last year's Texas League MVP campaign. No room at the inn for him in Kansas City.
  • Trayvon Robinson, OF, Dodgers (Triple-A Albuquerque): 1-for-1, R, 2 BB; 1-for-3, HR (3), R, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K. Up to .300/.404/.575 in 11 games after an ugly, strikeout-filled start. Still needs to make some adjustments, but could get September look to set up a much longer one next spring.
  • Austin Romine, C, Yankees (Double-A Trenton): 3-for-4, 2 HR (2), 3 R, 4 RBI, BB. Slugging percentage goes from .316 to .500 in one night; still has defensive issues as he's thrown out only 22% of opposing base stealing in Double-A career.
  • Joe Savery, 1B, Phillies (High-A Clearwater): 2-for-5, K. Starting to slip a bit, and nearly under .500 (25-for-49) after 13 games.
  • Daniel Tillman, RHP, Angels (Low-A Cedar Rapids): 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K. 2010 second-round pick is an interesting sleeper; fantastic closer in college getting a chance to start due to three-pitch mix, including plus fastball/slider combination.
  • Kolbrin Vitek, 3B, Red Sox (High-A Salem): 3-for-4, R, RBI. 2010 first-round pick is heating up; 8-for-13 in his last three games and .300/.404/.450 overall.
  • Alex White, RHP, Indians (Triple-A Columbus): 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 7 K. Very efficient outing with 66 of 88 pitches going for strikes; is 3-for-3 with good starts, showing improved secondary stuff and looking like the Indians prospect closest to the big leagues.
  • Dontrelle Willis, LHP, Reds (Triple-A Louisville): 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K. There might still be something here in the end, as left-handed hitters or 2-for-21 against him so far this season.

Not only is Gary Brown getting thrown out a lot, he's looking bad doing it. On Sunday I watched him get picked off once and run himself into an out when he tried to stretch a single into a double and get thrown out by 15 feet.

Montero is out of his goddammed mind.

I really, really want Dontrelle to get right and make it back to the show. That guy is too cool.

Anything of note with *real* Phillies prospects? No offense to Joe Savery, the 25-year old High-A first baseman.

If Brett Jackson even keeps up at 75% of his current pace, I have a feeling he will move quicker. Probably nothing before June, but I don't see the point in letting him marinate in AA more than a few months tops if this type of performance continues. Whether he gets moved to AAA or straight to the MLB (post May), largely depends on how the MLB club is performing and whether the OF is still too full to accommodate another body.

I don't see Brett Jackson getting anything more than a fresh, hot cup of joe come Semptember. As you said, too crowded of an outfield for him, and I don't see any reason to start his service clock early.

Might change if Philly wouldn't mind taking a second turn with Byrd though. I have a conspiracy theory the Cubs are batting Byrd third just to boost his trade value. Hendry to Ruben Amaro "Look! He bats THIRD for us! Great hitter!" Ruben to Hendry "I've got a spare washing machine and a bucket of BP balls... Deal?"

Cubs will likely be looking to trade Fukudome at the deadline, and assuming they'll pay some of his salary, could succeed. Colvin will continue to show some power, but doesn't get on base enough to be a starting corner outfielder. That could very well open a spot up for Jackson.

Service time won't do much to hold him back. If he's called up in July or September, they'll still get 6 full years out of him after this season. And as seen in 20 year old Castro getting called up last May(believe it was May), Cubs aren't overly concerned about service time.

I think you mean "Andrew Miller," not "Adam Miller."

Wow. An old brain fart raises it's ugly head from the dead. Watch how many times I call Nick Franklin 'Ryan' this year. That's another one.

When is Harper going to get promoted to the majors? I need the exact date.

That should be a podcast prediction game for your adoring listeners.

Won't he get called on September when the minor league season is over since he's already on the 40 man roster? Or do players on the 40 man roster sometimes not get called up when rosters expand?

The second - Being on the 40-man is no guarantee that you're on the big club in September.

Mere numbers cannot describe the homerun that Anthony Rizzo hit last night. It traveled about 450 feet to dead center. Very impressive. I knew the kid had power, but didn't realize he had that kind of pop in his bat.

So that would have been a Petco double?

I'll take it compared to what Hawpe and Cantu are doing.

Any news on Salvador Perez from KC? Last I had heard he seemed to be the catcher of the future for KC now w/ Myers out from behind the plate.

Do you think that Rizzo's hot streak is a sign that he doesn't need much AAA seasoning or that it is what is, just a hot streak from a talented player.

B). He hasn't hit for power and average in the same season before, two weeks is fantastic to see, but I don't consider that hard evidence that he's put it all together.

Neither do I. But that's just stats. I was looking for something with a scouting perspective.

He was crushing the ball this spring, showing fast hands and legit game power. Coming in, I knew Rizzo could hit, but he really impressed me, especially when I saw him tap into his pull-side power against a LHP! This LHP just happens to have one of the better changeups in the minors; the pitch has screwball action. Rizzo stayed back on the ball and tattooed it over the RF fence. One of the more impressive displays I saw in Arizona. I think he's legit.

Any thought that Clint Robinson might get the call to KC instead of Hosmer should Kila continue to flounder, if only to give the older guy his one shot and keep Hosmer from starting his MLB clock?

I assune Rizzo won't be called up until June at the earliest?
kgoldstein
4/22
If that. Why start the clock. He's hot as hell, and he's been great, but he's also playing in a launching pad that is averaging 15.7 runs per game.
Duranimal

Because the Pads have been shut out 5-19 games this year. The Pads are too smart to bring him up early, but they sure could use a hitter.
