Episode 35: I Will Take Your Liver Out

by Kevin Goldstein

Not much going on? Sure, so let's have a bit of Front Office 101 this week. After plenty of deep, metaphysical emails, we try (and fail) to understand what the Angels did this week, while also talking about what Mike Napoli means to the Rangers, and plenty of prospect talk with the Cardinals and White Sox Top 11 lists. The highlight comes with our special guest, John Coppolella, the Director of Baseball Administration with the Atlanta Braves. If you've ever had any questions about the arbitration process, you won't after this interview, as we go through the entire process with a fictional player named Johnny Shortstop. It's truly fascinating stuff and a rare glimpse at how the sausage is made. From there, we talk about Saturday's big SABR Day event in NYC, talk about refrigerators for way too long, and also supply details on how to drink with Jason and I on Saturday night. As always, we hope you enjoy.

Note: We do alert you to the presence of the occasional adult language. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Great show, guys. The talk with John Coppolella was fascinating. I wasn't aware that there's nothing in the rules about an automatic raise either.

Guys, it took me a couple years to "discover" your podcast. Now I feel like any of your subscribers that don't listen to it regularly are missing a really significant addition to what you offer. Nice job.

I agree. I don't know why I like the podcast so much, but I do. Also, and this is doesn't get mentioned enough, a lot of the other podcasts out there are kind of painful to listen to because the recording quality sucks. I like that these are higher quality recordings, makes it much easier to listen to.

As I said on the tweeterer, the Not Ozzie Guillen moments are priceless. Bravo on another excellent effort.

KG - I asked in the Cardinals thread but thought this might be a better area, since you spoke about their list on the Podcast. You've seen a lot of MWL games and spoken to a lot of scouts there. How would Miller compare to the other promising arms that have come through there in the last 5 years or so? What were the conversations about him versus say some of the other guys? Congrats to you and Jason on another great Podcast.

I am really looking forward to Jason's upcoming series of prospect articles. I am excited about the "heartbreak" angle for analyzing prospects, but am concerned that this contrarian approach may be a little outsider. As we learned from the discussions about art, you are usually an outsider because you are just no good. At the very least I am confident that I will not find the analysis to be reductive.

No; I assume the analysis will be a bit reductive. Nobody wants to read 2000 word breakdowns of each player in the minors, so I need to keep it simple. Also, it's not outsider if you are working from an insider vantage point, with insider tools on an insider platform. Thanks for playing.

Very good points. That was a really horrible attempt to play on your art school background. I was going to come with something about organ harvesting but I couldn't make that work either. Should've just stuck with "really looking forward to reading your stuff!"

And you are right about refrigerators. They are not all 50 grade. I had a landlord in college who stocked his apartments with classic icebox-style frigges. The kind with a lever you have to manipulate to open that your parents warned you against crawling inside because you will die. This was in 2003. It also didn't cool well which was the real shame of it all. That was a 30 grade refrigerator (assuming a 20 grade is reserved for refrigerators that fall on and crush people...cold or not).

20 Grade Fridge: The one Punky Brewster and Cherry Johnson almost killed themselves in. Classic PSA-style episode. I just dated myself.
