Just some quick notes from yesterday's action . . .

  • Dustin Ackley, 2B, Mariners (AFL: Javelinas): 4-for-4, HR (3), 2 R, 2 RBI. 8-for-12 in last three games with 15 total bases; hitting .417/.560/.750 in 11 games; only bad news is defense still suspect.
  • Brandon Belt, 1B, Giants (AFL: Scorpions): 2-for-3, HR (1), 3 R, RBI, BB. 10-for-18 in last four games and finally went deep; .364/.407/.545 in 14 contests.
  • Brad Emaus, 3B, Blue Jays (DWL: Toros): 2-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, K. Back on the map after bounce-back year; could project as future 2B/3B utility type.
  • Eduardo Escobar, SS, White Sox (AFL Saguaros): 4-for-5, 2 2B, 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI. One of the better fielding shortstops in the minors has made six errors already in AFL; if this is a real offensive step forward, he's one of the best prospects in the system.
  • Eric Hurley, RHP, Rangers (AFL: Rafters): 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K. Some very encouraging signs from oft-injured, once highly regarded arm; has been getting into low 90s.
  • Jason Kipnis, 2B, Indians (AFL: Javelinas): 2-for-5, HR (3), 2 R, 2 RBI, K, SB. Hitting just .184, but six of nine hits have gone for extra bases.
  • Carlos Peguero, OF, Mariners (DWL: Tigrey): 1-for-3, HR (2), 2 R, RBI, B, 2 K. Hitting .367/.406/.633 after brutal second half of regular season; tons of power, tons of Ks.
  • Mark Trumbo, 1B/3B, Magallanes (VEN: Navegantes): 2-for-4, 2B, HR (5), 2 R, 3 RBI. Leads Venezuela in slugging and extra-base hits. Ignore the fact that he's playing third over there – he's not even a good first baseman.
  • Brandon Wood, 3B, Angels (AFL: Solar Sox): 3-for-5, 2B, R, 2 RBI. Hitting .317/.362/.460 in 15 games; will he get another chance with the Angels? With anyone?

Belt's HR was an opposite field shot in a ballpark where the LF line is 360 feet. That makes it more impressive.

Apologies if I've missed it, but any word on Michael Taylor? Looks like he's hitting about .250, so I guess it makes sense that 1-for-4 isn't likely to get a writeup . . .

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up after a very hot start there.

re: Ackley's defense

Suspect to the point that Sea might soon feel compelled to move him to the OF becuase his bat is ready now and his glove at 2B may never be?

Kevin you'd be a better person to answer than any of us. Are we jumping the gun on Ackley's D? He's played exactly one year at a brand new position all while jumping to AAA in his first year out of college.

Do scouts feel that he just doesn't have the chops for it and never will or is it simply a matter of actually learning the position?

I do think you have a timing issue possibly where the bat could be ready before the glove in this case, and that's even if you do believe he can play there, which I'm not convinced of.

Little help here. I know that Wood can't be sent to the minors without cleAring waivers. I also know he ended the season in the minors due to injury. So if he doesn't break ST with the Angels he will have clear waivers to go down right? That injury designation doesn't carry over does it?

Correct, he has to clear waivers. We have a VERY long discussion about Brandon Wood on the podcast which will be out later today.

We will take Wood on the Cubs or Sox. I see him as the next Mark Reynolds and is that so bad in hitting parks like Chicago? He even played a decent SS for the Angels this year. Maybe they should just let him alone there for half a season or more to see if he will work out. Instead they keep jerking him around and all you get is low avg and lots of wind.

Well, I'd love for the Astros to claim him. I mean he might have a real shot at beating out Johnson or manzella

I was dying for the Astros to get in on that and trade for him to play SS...somehow.

unfortunately, this year he was Mark Reynolds without the power. Which is a little like being Otis Nixon, only much slower.

Seriously - another Scorpions update and still nothing on a single O's prospect? They did send nine players, including 3 of their top-10 prospects (as per Baseball America) in Adams, Pelzer and Avery.

Adams and Avery both went 0-for-4 and Pelzer has walked 10 in 8 innings. What am I to do there?
