Pat Corbin, LHP, Angels(High-A Rancho Cucamonga): 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K

A second-round pick in 2009 out of a Florida junior college, Corbin is a lefty whose sum is great than his parts.  His fastball, breaking ball and changeup all rate as average-to-plus, and he'll throw all three pitches for strikes at any point in the count.  With a 2.82 ERA in eight California League starts, he's proving he can pitch in tough environments, and with he's ceiling is that of a No. 4 starter, he could get to that ceiling quickly.

Devin Mesoraco, C, Reds(Double-A Carolina): 3-for-4, 2B, 3B, HR (8), 3 R, 2 RBI, K

With all of the great hitting performances we've had in the minors this year, how many people are aware that Mesoraco is hitting .313/.379/.613 across two levels?  With 18 home runs in 290 at-bats, he's already doubled his previous season-high, and the 2007 first-round pick has shined behind the plate as well, gunning down 13 of 25 potential base stealers since his promotion to Double-A.  All but off the radar coming into the year, he's back as one of the better catching prospects around.

Cody Scarpetta, RHP, Brewers(High-A Brevard County): 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 11 K

An 11th-round pick in 2007, Scarpetta has been up-and-down this year when it comes to command, but he's been consistently in the low-90s with his fastball and has arguably the best curveball in the system.  Something has clicked in the last three starts for the big righty, as he's struck out 28 over 19 innings while giving up just nine hits.

Others of Note:

  • Phillippe Aumont, RHP, Phillies (High-A Clearwater): 6 IP, 4 H, 4 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 13 K.  Easily the most dominating start of the year for otherwise struggling righty.
  • Nick Barnese, RHP, Rays (High-A Charlotte): 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K.  Under-publicized arm has plus heater and two solid secondary offerings to go with great command; just four earned runs over 30 innings in last five starts.
  • Brandon Belt, 1B, Giants (Double-A Richmond): 2-for-5, 2B, R, RBI.  That game actually lowers his Double-A line to .455/.520/.773 in six contests.
  • Wilfredo Boscan, RHP, Rangers (High-A Bakersfield): Finesse righty, but very good at it and only 20 years old; three runs over 22 innings in last three starts.
  • Peter Bourjos, OF, Angels (Triple-A Salt Lake): 3-for-6, R, 2 RBI.  18-for-37 in eight July games and .282/.333/.439 overall; some scouts see a good fourth outfielder, some see a solid second-division starter.
  • Drake Britton, LHP, Red Sox (Low-A Greenville): 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.  Coming back from Tommy John surgery; has been comfortably up to 95 mph.
  • Chris Carter, 1B, Athletics (Triple-A Sacramento): 1-for-3, HR (19), R, 2 RBI, K.  Four home runs in last eight games; walks and power are there as much as ever, he's just stopped hitting for average at .238/.346/.498.
  • Darrell Ceciliani, OF, Mets (Short-season Brooklyn): 3-for-4, 2 R, 3 SB.  Becoming a bit of a regular here with .392/.442/.608 line and starting to show his well-above average speed more often.
  • David Cooper, 1B, Blue Jays (Double-A New Hampshire); 3-for-5, 2 HR (14), 2 R, 4 RBI.  Finally some signs of life?  11-for-27 with three home runs in July, still at just .233/.293/.436 overall.
  • Aaron Crow, RHP, Royals (Double-A Northwest Arkansas): 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K.  Best start as a pro lowers ERA to 5.67.
  • Khris Davis, OF, Brewers (Low-A Wisconsin): 4-for-5, 2 2B, HR (13), 2 R, 5 RBI.  '09 seventh-round pick has solid-but-unspectacular tools across the board; .299/.398/.529 line but a bit old for the level and needs to move up.
  • Kevin Eichhorn, RHP, Angels (Rookie-level Missoula): 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 7 K.  '08 third-rounder (and son of Mark) has advanced secondary stuff is the velocity ever catches up.
  • Tyler Flowers, C, White Sox (Triple-A Charlotte): 0-for-3, 3 K, SB.  Since hitting .323/.432/.613 in April, top catching prospect in the system has hit .182 (33-for-181) with 71 strikeouts.  Has to hit, because the defense is just plain bad.
  • Christian Friedrich, LHP, Rockies (Double-A Tulsa): 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 12 K.  Returning to form, as he's set a new season-high in strikeouts in each of his last two starts, including nine over six innings last time out.
  • Paul Goldschmidt, 1B, Diamondbacks (High-A Visalia): 3-for-5, RBI, 2 K.  11-for-19 in last five games with 25 total bases; .307/.361/.590 in 84 games and showing enough bat to be a legit prospect, even as a first-base only type.
  • Grant Green, SS, Athletics (High-A Stockton): 2-for-4, 2B, 3 R, K.  Two hits in four of last five games; .318/.368/.476 overall with better number each month.
  • Jedd Gyorko, 3B, Padres (Short-season Eugene): 4-for-5, HR (5), 2 R, RBI.  Batting .353/.380/.632 and could probably handle a full-season assignment.
  • Chuckie Jones, OF, Giants (Rookie-level AZL Giants): 3-for-4, HR (2), 2 R, RBI, BB, K.  Seventh-round pick last month is raw but also a 6-foot-3, 235 pound monster with massive tools.
  • Ryan Kalish, OF, Red Sox (Triple-A Pawtucket): 4-for-5, R.  17-for-33 in last eight games and .338/.410/.459 overall; could get a big league look soon.
  • Michael Main, RHP, Giants (Double-A Richmond): 4.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 3 BB, 0 K.  Ex-Ranger acquired in the Molina deal is struggling with his new team (and new level).
  • J.D. Martinez, OF, Astros (Low-A Lexington): 5-for-5, 2B, 2 HR (12), 3 R, 6 RBI.  A 20th-round pick last year; batting a crazy .355/.422/.572 in 82 games, but also nearly 23 and doing it in the Sally League.
  • Will Myers, C, Royals (High-A Wilmington): 4-for-5, 4 RBI.  14-for-32 (.438) in eight Carolina League games, although spending as much time at designated hitter as catcher.
  • Kirk Nieuwenhuis, OF, Mets (Double-A Binghamton): 2-for-5, HR (13), R, RBI. 17-for-28 in last six games with nine doubles and two home runs; .302/.348/.532 overall and over that hurdle than takes him from interesting to very real, very good prospect.
  • Dennis Raben, 1B/OF, Mariners (High-A High Desert): 3-for-3, 2B, HR (10), 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB.  .384/.444/.728 line is obviously impressive, but all ten home runs have been hit at High Desert.
  • Aderlin Rodriguez, 3B, Mets (Rookie-level Kingsport): 3-for-5, 2B, 2 HR (7), 2 R, 5 RBI, K.  Explosion continues; up to .292/.329/.692 in 16 games, including seven home run in just 65 at-bats.
  • Fernando Salas, RHP, Cardinals (Triple-A Memphis): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. Could get a shot at helping a struggling Cardinals pen; 6 1/3 hitless innings in last six outings with no walks and 11 strikeouts.
  • Edward Salcedo, SS, Braves (Low-A Rome): 3-for-4, 2B, 3B, 2 R, 3 RBI.  First big game for high-profile international signee.
  • Chris Sale, LHP, White Sox (High-A Winston Salem): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. The second-highest pick (13th overall) to have signed; being used sparingly, but has fired three hitless innings so far as a pro.
  • Cody Stanley, C, Cardinals (Rookie-level Johnson City): 3-for-5, 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI.  Fourth-round pick last year is batting .409/.447/.614 in 12 games; small but athletic catcher.
  • Mike Trout, OF, Angels (Low-A Cedar Rapids): 0-for-1, 4 BB, 2 R, K.  Walk rate has gone up significantly of late, but that just might be a matter of no longer getting pitched to.
  • Niko Vasquez, 3B, Cardinals (High-A Palm Beach): 3-for-5, 2 2B, 2 R, 5 RBI, K.  2008 third-round pick is tough to figure out; hitting just .251 with 75 strikeouts in 267 at-bats, but power and walks bring triple-slash line up to more intriguing .251/.385/.431.

Would you feel comfortable putting Mesoraco in a top 100? Top 75? Top 50?

I don't know. I'm always uncomfortable ranking off the cuff, I lie to put big work into those. I'll say if I started a Top 100 right now, he'd be on the list of players that have to be considered.

Kevin - Is the 50/50 split on catching for Myers a function of the Royals starting to give up on him there, or just that they also like Sal Perez and are trying to split time between the two?

If its the later, don't they need to do something to sort through the log jam at Wilmington? Not sure what exactly, as they're probably 2 of the 5 youngest players in that league, I would guess. You're not going to send Perez down to Burlington, but I can't see pushing either up to AA yet.

If they're giving up on Myers at C, then they need to start getting him reps in RF, or wherever he's going to end up.

Thanks as always.

I agree on the last part.

Good lord, an Astros "prospect."

What reason can the Astros possibly have for not moving Martinez up to AA? He has shown since he was drafted that he doesn't belong in A ball. Has he fielding issues?

If called up tomorrow where would Kalish fall in the list of Cameron, Nava, Hall, McDonald and Patterson for the next three weeks?

Any idea of Crow's velocity? His K rate has been abysmal.

Who's a better prospect, Niewenhaus or Havens??

Not KG, but I think until Havens shows he can stay healthy for a full season, it's Niewenhaus.

Agreed, for this and other reasons.
