David Leonhardt canvasses some theories and comes to some tentative results. I think it has more to do with random variation than any grand theory, because just a few great players can affect the numbers a great deal.

Are morning people better pitchers than night owls?
One study says yes, although a relatively small sample and reliance on ERA limit its value. Another finding was that teams traveling west to east have a marked advantage over teams traveling in the opposite direction.
